The spatial organization of daily rainfall over Mallorca, Spain

Abstract: Daily rainfall affinity areas are derived for the island of Mallorca using four years of data, and a 9 6 x 9 6 intersite correlation matrix. An initial visual impression of the nature of rainfall organization is afforded by the mapping of correlation links between sites. The Serra de Tramontana form a climatological as well as topographic barrier, producing a marked alignment in spatial rainfall occurrence in that part of the island. Elsewhere 'core' sites are identified, about which rainfall correlation is hi… Show more

“…The sampling took place between 14 and 27 November 1994 within nine sites in geographical areas with known differences in annual precipitation on Mallorca (Sumner, Ramis & Guijarro 1993), ranging from more than 1000 mm in the mountains along the windward north-west coast to about 350 mm at the southern coast (Table 1, Fig. 1).…”

“…in precipitation is Principal Components Analysis (PCA) applied in several previous studies across different parts of the world, including Hastenrath andRosen (1983), Drosdowsky, (1993) and Sumner et al (1993). PCA is used to compress variance, reduce redundancy, and identify information content in a dataset.…”
