The spasmolytic activity of the essential oil of Thymus baeticus boiss in rats

Abstract: Gas chromatography and GC/MS studies of Thymus buericus Boiss essential oil showed its major component to be l,&cineole. The essential oil was found to present a marked spasmolytic activity in rat duodennm against acetylcholine via a non-competitive type of inbibition. “…These results, thus, suggest that EoWs operated as an agonist through one of the two muscarinic receptor contraction pathways. Similar observations were done with plant extracts from Nepeta cataria L. [28], Satureja hortensis [29], and Satureja obavata [30].…”

“…Finally, it is also an interesting therapeutic option in ophthalmic disorders, against inflammation and infection in external parts of the eye (conjunctiva, lacrimal sac, cornea, and edges of the eyelids) (46). As for Thymus vulgaris, the active compound present in the essential oil exhibits anthelmintic, antibacterial and antifungal properties (47), as well as antispasmodic activity (48). Moreover, it may be useful against bronchospasm (49) and as mucolytic (50), which may explain its wide use in chronic bronchitis.…”

“…The inhibitory effect may be explained by inhibition of Ca 2+ entry into smooth muscle through voltage-stimulated channels and/or blocking Ca 2+ release into smooth muscle and/or blocking intracellular bound Ca 2+ release.
