The Southeast Saline Everglades revisited: 50 years of coastal vegetation change

Abstract: Abstract. We examined the vegetation of the Southeast Saline Everglades (SESE), where water management and sea level rise have been important ecological forces during the last 50 years. Marshes within the SESE were arranged in well‐defined compositional zones parallel to the coast, with mangrove‐dominated shrub communities near the coast giving way to graminoid‐mangrove mixtures, and then Cladium marsh. The compositional gradient was accompanied by an interiorward decrease in total aboveground biomass, and in… Show more

“…Only the first of these stressors will be ameliorated by CERP and, therefore, the spoonbill 493 assessment tool only addresses issues for water flow, volume and duration. 494 495 Changes in salinity patterns reduces primary production (through stresses caused 496 by rapid and frequent fluctuations in salinity; Montague and Ley, 1993, Ross et al, 2000, 497 Frezza and Lorenz, 2003 and alter the prey base fish community to a state of lower 498 secondary production (Lorenz, 1999, Lorenz andSerafy, 2006). As a result, the overall 499 abundance of spoonbill prey items is reduced.…”

“…These changes have had many ecological consequences, including alterations in nutrient concentration and distribution, plant community composition, aboveground net primary production, and periphyton dynamics (Newman et al, 1996;Ross et al, 2000;Armentano et al, 2006;Childers et al, 2006;Iwaniec et al, 2006). In an effort to reverse these alterations, significant Everglades restoration activities began in the 1970s (Lodge, 2005), and now fall under the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP).…”

“…ENP anglers attached the highest value to improvements in the overall ecosystem health. The case for restoration of freshwater flow in ENP is not just based on improving the fishery habitat Chen and Twilley, 1999;Ross et al, 2000). ENP provides a host of ecosystem services including groundwater recharge, wildlife habitat, carbon sequestration, and mangroves-related services, among others (Richardson et al, 2014;Jerath et al, 2016).…”
