The Southampton Dupuytren's Scoring Scheme

Abstract: The aim of this study was to construct and validate a simple patient-related outcome score to quantify the disability caused by Dupuytren's disease (DD), thus enabling prioritisation of treatment, to allow reliable audit of surgical outcome and to support future research. The Southampton Dupuytren's Scoring System (SDSS) was developed in a staged fashion according to the recommendations of The Derby Outcomes Conference. (1) Item generation; (2) Item reduction; (3) Internal consistency; (4) Test-re-test; (5) Fi… Show more

“…An example that has been shown to be sufficiently sensitive to change is the Boston questionnaire for carpal tunnel syndrome [118]. Recently the Unité Rhumatologique de Affections de la Main scale (URAM) questionnaire [15] and Southampton Dupuytren’s Scoring System [119] have been developed as disease specific questionnaires, but have not yet been validated by other investigators.…”

“…33 The functional score chosen for this study (SDSS) was a diseasespecific, patient-related outcome measure with good inter-observer reliability and better sensitivity than Quick-DASH (Disability of the arm, shoulder and hand). 31 Our participants reported a significant improvement in functional score (8.24 versus 1.88 P ≤ 0.0005) between initial and 30 days review and this improvement persisted at 12 months with a score of 1.59 (P ≤ 0.0005).…”

“…Our results serve to show that QuickDASH is not the most effective tool for assessment of DD outcomes. Several authors [17,21] advocate the use of disease-specific questionnaires, such as the Southampton Dupuytren's Scoring System (SDSS) [22] or the Unité Rhumatologique des Affections de la Main (URAM) [23,24], moving away from employing more widely used questionnaires for the measurement of DD outcomes, such as DASH or Michigan Hand Outcomes, since pain is among the parameters the latter assess, which is rare in DD, and they also do not show proper correlation with improvement in the range of finger movement.…”
