The Sources and Transformations of Dissolved Organic Matter in the Pearl River Estuary, China, as Revealed by Stable Isotopes

Abstract: To investigate the sources and transformation processes of bulk marine dissolved organic matter (DOM), seasonally collected water samples from the Pearl River Estuary (PRE), south China, were analyzed for concentration and stable isotopic ratios (δ 13 C and δ 15 N) of DOM. The δ 13 C values clearly indicated a shift of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) sources from terrigenous material in the river to predominantly plankton in the lower estuary. The distribution of δ 13 C during the estuarine mixing, in combinati… Show more

“…The POM in marine environments can originate from allochthonous sources and the in situ biological processes (Ye et al, 2016). In our study, POC and PN are not correlated (p > 0.05), which differs from the linear relationships found in the marine POM dominated by phytoplankton (Zhou et al, 2021).…”

“…Indeed, the level of Chl a was also relatively high in Zone B (Figure 2d). If the assimilation was the sole cause, a coupled 1:1 increase of offset‐δ 15 N‐NO 3 − and offset‐δ 18 O‐NO 3 − would be observed (Granger et al., 2004, 2008; Ye et al., 2016). However, in our case, offset‐δ 15 N‐NO 3 − and offset‐δ 18 O‐NO 3 − slightly deviated from the assimilation line in surface waters (Figure 5).…”

“…The organic matter is a carrier of large quantities of carbon and nitrogen (Ye et al, 2018). Both algae and riverine are also key organic matter sources in the coastal zone (Ray et al, 2018).…”
