e applications of steel slag powder and steel slag aggregate in ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) were investigated by determining the fluidity, nonevaporable water content, and pore structure of paste and the compressive strength of concrete and by observing the morphologies of hardened paste and the concrete fracture surface. e results show that the fluidity of the paste containing steel slag is higher. e nonevaporable water content of the hardened paste containing steel slag powder is close to that of the control sample at late ages. Both steel slag powder and steel slag aggregate react and connect tightly to gels and hardened paste, respectively. When the cement replacement ratio is no more than 10%, the proportion of pores larger than 50 nm in the hardened paste containing steel slag powder is close to that of the control sample, and the UHPC containing steel slag powder can display satisfactory compressive strengths. e UHPC containing steel slag aggregate demonstrates higher compressive strengths.

Ladle furnace slag (LFS) is a by-product of a steel plant. As the chemical composition and free lime (f-CaO) content of each batch of slag are significantly different, it is difficult to use the same operation method to recover LFS. In this study, three types of LFS were used to partially replace lime in the dephosphorization process, and the compositions were adjusted to a fixed range by adding Al2O3. This method reduced the effect of different LFS components and significantly reduced the Ca2SiO4 amount (from 31.4% to 17.1%) in the produced modified oxidizing slag. Furthermore, after dephosphorization, the X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns of the three LFSs indicated transformation into gehlenite and wustite. The modified oxidizing slag f-CaO content was 0.41%, which was lower than that in the electric arc furnace oxidizing slag (1.2–1.4%) and the LFS (0.9–3.4%). In addition, the expansion test results of the modified oxidizing slag showed almost no expansion, which conforms to the ASTM D2940 standards; thus, this material can be used for preparing paving materials. This study provides an approach for LFS treatment that could reduce costs within the steel industry.

Axial Compressive Behavior of Self-Stressing Steel Slag Aggregate Concrete Filled Steel Tubular Columns With Bond-Slip Damage

The axial compressive behavior of self-stressing steel slag aggregate concrete filled steel tubular (CFST) columns with bond-slip damage is investigated in this paper. Six bond-slip damaged specimens and two undamaged specimens with different diameter-thickness ratios and expansion ratios are tested. According to the test, the outward deformation dominates the failure of the axial loaded bond-slip damaged specimens. The ultimate bearing capacity is lower with higher diameter-thickness ratio, while the increase of the expansion ratio will bring benefits to bond-slip damaged specimens. The bond-slip damage has a little influence on the ultimate capacity. The ultimate displacement will be decreased by increasing the diameter-thickness ratio. The effect of expansion ratio on the longitudinal displacement is not obvious. The stiffness degradation can be mitigated by raising the expansion ratio. The ultimate axial and circumferential strains increase as the expansion ratio increases while they decease with the diameter-thickness ratio of bond-slip damaged specimens increasing. In addition, the accuracy of existing CFST design specifications for predicting the strength of bond-slip damaged specimens is evaluated.
