The Sonographic Spectrum of Baker Cysts

Abstract: Baker cysts are the most common pathologic finding in the sonography of the popliteal fossa. They have a wide range of sonographic appearances. Some of them may need to be recognized and differentiated from other popliteal lesions. Therefore, familiarity with their different imaging appearances is useful for clinical practice. This review summarized different presentations of Baker cysts. They are described in several categories, organized according to their shape and formation: typical Baker cysts and their m… Show more

“…Baker's cyst was the most frequently detected cystic lesion in the present study, and in consistency with multiple previous reports, it was more common in oldaged males (8,21,22) . The progressive degenerative thinning out or opening of the joint capsule with aging could explain our results (23) .…”

“…19 Because of the functional valve mechanism, fluid in the knee joint is constantly drained into Baker cysts, which results in decreased fluid in the anterior knee. 20,21 Therefore, in adult patients with Baker cysts, lack of fluid in the suprapatellar recess cannot rule out knee effusion.…”
