The Sonographic Appearance of Placenta Accreta

Abstract: Placenta accreta is an uncommon entity in which the placental villi invade the myometrium. The classic sonographic findings include the absence of a hypoechoic retroplacental zone, the presence of dilated vessels extending from the placenta through the myometrium, irregular cystic spaces in the placenta, and pulsatile maternal blood flow within these hypoechoic spaces. It is often accompanied by placenta previa. In this study, the authors report findings in six cases, four of which were accurately diagnosed so… Show more

“…Such findings included the number of lacunae, 11 14 loss of the retroplacental clear space, 11 , 12 , 14 16 loss of visualization of the myometrium, 14 and bladder wall irregularity 14 . The presence or absence of subplacental vascularity, 17 19 vessels bridging from the placenta to the uterine margin, 14 , 15 , 17 gaps in myometrial blood flow, 14 , 17 vessels crossing interface disruption sites, 15 and turbulent lacunae 17 , 20 also were identified in cases in which color Doppler imaging was used. If a diagnosis was given (eg, not missing or uncertain), the confidence of that diagnosis was scored for each imaging study on a scale of 0 (none) to 10 (certain), and image quality was scored on a scale of 1 (very poor) to 10 (best).…”
