The soft x-ray imager on THESEUS: the transient high energy survey and early universe surveyor

Abstract: We are entering a new era for high energy astrophysics with the use of new technology to increase our ability to both survey and monitor the sky. The Soft X-ray Imager (SXI) instrument on the THESEUS mission will revolutionize transient astronomy by using wide-field focusing optics to increase the sensitivity to fast transients by several orders of magnitude. The THESEUS mission is under Phase A study by ESA for its M5 opportunity. THESEUS will carry two large area monitors utilizing Lobster-eye (the SXI instr… Show more

“…The images show the two cameras with the mounting structures and the optics on top. More information on the SXI can be found in [35] Italy. The mission nominal duration will be 4 years (corresponding to about three and half years of scientific operations), due to programmatic constraints: no technological issues preventing an extension by at least 2 more years have been identified.…”

“…The detection plane of one XGIS unit has an active geometric area of 6400×0.45 2 = 1296 cm 2 , for what concerns the CsI(Tl) scintillators. The individual SDD pixels have an active cross section smaller than that of the underlying scintillators, due to partial covering by the PCB (3.5×5.0 mm 2 for 4800 pixels and 3.5×3.5 mm 2 for the remaining ones).…”

“…In order to fulfil the science requirements, detect as many high z GRBs as possible, and to provide a large field of view, a multi module lobster eye telescope was proposed. The initial design was based on that of the THESEUS SXI instrument 16 (Figure 3), but due to the difference in size of the detectors selected for Gamow compared to THESEUS, it was necessary to change the shape of each module.…”
