Tourism development contributes to economic development. In emerging economies like Kazakhstan, tourism development needs active entrepreneurship. As the country emerges from the post-Soviet era, there has been an increase in economic development and prosperity. Entrepreneurship in the tourism sector can drive economies forward through the creation of new tourism and hospitality businesses. The macroeconomic environment can influence entrepreneurial activity. We use an autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model to examine the impact of macroeconomic factors on tourism entrepreneurship in Kazakhstan. Using data from 1996 to 2018, we find that there is a positive short-run relationship between wages in the tourism sector and entrepreneurship, suggesting that wage growth in the sector attracts entrepreneurs. In the long run, however, tourism sector wages have a negative relationship with entrepreneurship, suggesting that these higher wages represent a higher cost to entrepreneurship. There is also a strong positive relationship between national income and tourism entrepreneurship in Kazakhstan. Implications of macroeconomic policy changes for Kazakhstan and other emerging economies are discussed.

The mangrove ecosystem with its uniqueness is a natural resource that has the potential to be used as a tourist destination. Kampung Nipah Mangrove Beach in North Sumatra Province, Indonesia, is community-based tourism that has been managed sustainably and has the potential to become a source of prosperity for the community. This study aimed to analyze visitor assessments, the economic value of the existence of tourist objects, the intensity of visits, and factors that affect the intensity of visits at The Mangrove Beach of Kampung Nipah. Through this research, ratings were generated on various aspects of the management of tourist objects according to visitor assessments (such as natural beauty, security, spatial planning, facilities, and accessibility). The economic value of the existence of ecosystem-based tourism objects is obtained with the travel cost method (TCM) approach. The magnitude of the economic value illustrates the extent to which community-based mangrove tourism objects create spending from visitors, most of which becomes income for the communities involved. This study also produced information on the intensity of visits and factors influencing the intensity of visitors to travel. The results of this study are an important reference for managers and related stakeholders to improve services, attractiveness, and development of tourism object management.

The study aims to determine the socio-economic impact of the decline in firm performances of hotels in Sri Lanka. Evidence from previous research found that 91% of the hotels listed in the Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE) were in the distress zone and this study aims to fill the prevailing knowledge gap by determining the socio-economic impact of this decline. The study will be conducted using a sample of 33 hotels listed under the consumer services sector of the CSE, by considering the firm performance as the independent variable while the dependent variable is the socio-economic impact. The firm size was considered as the moderating variable. Indicators such as Return on Equity (ROE), Return on Assets (ROA) and occupancy rate derived from annual reports and other publications was used to measure firm performance while several indicators derived from statistical reports published by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) and Central Bank will be used to measure socio-economic impact. The research will be conducted during a period of 10 years from 2009 to 2019. Findings from the research will contribute to the existing literature on the assessment of socio-economic impacts and are beneficial to a variety of stakeholders such as hotel managers, government, tourist development authorities and upcoming researchers.
