“…Furthermore, we found that home acculturation was negatively correlated with psychological adaptation, suggesting that the more refugees feel connected to their home culture, the more likely they are to experience negative mental health outcomes. This confirms previous studies suggesting that home orientation is associated with feelings of pessimism, low self-esteem, and hopelessness (de Lucena et al, 2020;Maydell-Stevens et al, 2007). When investigating whether reasons for displacement affected acculturation and adaptation, we found that refugees who were forced to leave their country scored higher on home acculturation and lower on psychological and sociocultural adaptation than those who left deliberately.…”

“…Indeed, lower balance between home and host cultures was found to be correlated with poorer psychological and/or sociocultural adaptation. More specifically, higher orientation to one’s home country was negatively correlated with psychological and sociocultural adaptation, as this attitude resulted in isolation within the host community (de Lucena et al, 2020; Maydell-Stevens et al, 2007). Hence, in the face of forced displacement, refugees are often torn between building a new relationship with the host culture while maintaining their connection to the home culture (Green et al, 2019).…”

“…Some studies explored the influence of protective factors for mental disorders and promotive factors for mental and general health, such as resilience (Alduraidi et al, 2020; Cengiz et al, 2018; Röhr et al, 2020; Sim et al, 2019; Yalim, 2021), well-being and quality of life (Bagci & Canpolat, 2020; Georgiadou et al, 2020; Rizkalla & Segal, 2018, 2019; Tinghög et al, 2017; Uygun, 2021; Yalim, 2021), coping strategies (Alzoubi et al, 2019; Braun-Lewensohn et al, 2019; Ersahin, 2022; Georgiadou et al, 2020; Khamis, 2022; Woltin et al, 2018; Yalim, 2021), and social support (Ahmad et al, 2021; Böge et al, 2020; Georgiadou et al, 2020; Gottvall et al, 2019; Khamis, 2022; Mohammad et al, 2018; Okenwa-Emegwa et al, 2019; Sarto de Lucena et al, 2020; Sim et al, 2019; Yalim, 2021). In general, higher values of these variables predicted better outcomes for mental health and improvement in quality of life and psychosocial well-being.…”

“…Migrants with different acculturation experiences may differ in their typical patterns of stress reactions and coping (Noh and Kaspar, 2003;Yoshihama, 2002), possibly changing their status, role or class affiliation (Andronic, Constantin, 2022). Perceptions of cultural distance and orientation to native culture were associated with low rates of psychological and sociocultural adjustment, while orientation to the host culture contributed to better psychological and sociocultural adjustment for migrants (Lusiena, Hoersting, Modesto, 2020).…”
