Life quality is an important indicator of sustainable development. Farmers’ quality of life strongly affects the farm’s viability. The main goal of this study was to identify the relationships between three main components of farmers’ quality of life: economic situation, living conditions, and mental comfort. In the first phase of the study, the theoretical model representing potential relationships between quality of life components was constructed, and in the second phase the relationships were verified with the use of the structural equation modelling method. The sample consisted of 600 farmers participating in the Polish Farm Accountancy Data Framework (FADN). In the analyses, data from the FADN database and data obtained during supplementary interviews with farmers were used. The analyses revealed that living conditions are significantly and positively correlated with the economic situation and mental comfort, while mental comfort turned out to be negatively correlated with the economic situation. It was concluded that future agricultural and rural development policies should be more focused on the social dimension of sustainable development than before, particularly considering the fact that a farmer’s higher engagement in the improvement of their family’s economic condition might result in lowering their mental comfort due to the stress and work overload.

Social Sustainability Assessment of Neighborhood Design: A Comparative Study in Nablus City Based on Multiplicity and Singularity

This paper assesses the potential of multiplicity in the housing environment for achieving social sustainability compared to singularity. For this purpose, a neighborhood assessment framework was developed to cover three values of social sustainability, namely, stability, continuity, and fairness, as well as several factors related to each value. Two cases were chosen from the neighborhoods in the city of Nablus: Type (1) as an example of multiplicity, and type (2) as an example of singularity. The research data were collected through an architectural survey on the features of both types of neighborhoods, and analyzed in details. On this basis, the two types of neighborhoods were compared based on the said values. The results show that the values of sustainability increase in type (2) at the level of the single building, while growing in type (1) at the level of the residential neighborhood. Multiplicity is a high-potential approach for achieving social sustainability, if the design of the residential buildings caters to people’s needs and wants. In addition, several suggestions were made for improving the neighborhood design in Palestine based on multiplicity.

Las oportunidades de quienes habitan urbanizaciones precarias se encuentran fuertemente condicionadas por variables vinculadas al soporte físico del contexto doméstico y barrial. En contextos marcados por el avance del narcotráfico estas variables físicas resultan claves, y la apropiación-rehabilitación urbana del espacio público resulta estratégica. En coherencia con los postulados del microurbanismo, se indaga el rol que posee el mejoramiento y la revalorización del espacio público en la activación otros procesos psico-socio-comunitarios conducentes a interrumpir el círculo de segregación, abandono de espacios públicos, cooptación de los mismos por actividades ilegales e incremento de la inseguridad. Metodológicamente este artículo caracteriza críticamente el modelo de intervención integral diseñado y puesto en marcha en los barrios Müller y Maldonado de la ciudad de Córdoba (Argentina), barrios con baja calidad de vida, creciente informalidad y avance de la inseguridad asociada al narcotráfico. Bajo este abordaje y desde el reconocimiento de la necesidad de habilitar a los ciudadanos en la planificación colectiva y participativa del territorio, se exponen las estrategias de diseño y gestión urbana implementadas en estas zonas a fin de sanar el deterioro urbano y propiciar una transformación de estos asentamientos a partir de intervenciones más realistas y menos costosas.
