The Social Functioning Questionnaire: A Rapid and Robust Measure of Perceived Functioning

Abstract: The population mean score in 4164 subjects was 4.6 and the data from all studies suggested that a score of 10 or more indicated poor social functioning. Those presenting as psychiatric emergencies had the poorest social function (mean 11.4) and psychiatric patients from general practice the best function (mean 7.7) of the clinical populations. The eight item scores had a normal distribution in psychiatric populations and a skewed one in a normal population; scores were relatively stable over the short (weeks) … Show more

“…The item formulation was ‘How strong did you experience feelings of loneliness during the past 7 days?’ and it was answered on a 5-point Likert scale ranging from 0, not at all , to 4, very strong . The second item derived from the Social Functioning Questionnaire (SFQ; Tyrer et al, 2005). The item formulation was ‘I feel lonely and isolated from other people’ and it was answered on a 4-point Likert scale ranging from 0, almost all the time , to 3, not at all .…”

“…Experimental psychopathology research typically measures clinical constructs in analogue populations, and these too often have heavily skewed distributions (Rutter & Miglioretti, 2003;Tyrer, et al, 2005;Zimmerman, et al, 2004). Although these ROBUST ESTIMATION 13 distributional shapes do not prevent the parameter estimates of the linear model derived from OLS from being unbiased and optimal, other classes of estimator may be more accurate.…”

“…Substantial skew has been found in economic and cost indicators (Barber & Thompson, 2000;Hlatky, Boothroyd, & Johnstone, 2002) and measures of quality of life (Arostegui, Nunez-Anton, & Quintana, 2007) and social functioning (Tyrer, et al, 2005) in clinical trial data. Skew is the norm in measures of depression (Rutter & Miglioretti, 2003;Zimmerman, Chelminski, & Posternak, 2004), mania (Picardi, et al, 2008) and suicidal ideation (Binks, et al, 2006).…”

“…All participants were asked about suicide attempts in the last year during the phase one interview. Social functioning was assessed using the eight-item Social Functioning Questionnaire (SFQ ; Tyrer et al 2005). Each item was scored from 0 to 3 (scale range 0 to 24), with higher scores indicating (more) problems with social functioning.…”
