The objectives of this study are to determine the self-assessed oral health status and behavior of entrants educating in health related faculties of a university, Ankara, Turkey. There were currently four faculties namely Medicine, Pharmacy, Dentistry and Health Sciences in Hacettepe University with 964 first year students; 853 (88.5%) of them were participated in this descriptive study. Data collected via a self-administered pre-tested questionnaire included items to evaluate the selfassessed oral health status and behaviour. All students were informed of the purpose of the study and how to fill the questionnaire. The data were analyzed using SPSS Version 15.0. Chi square test was performed to test the significance of the differences. 74.0% of the students were between 18-19 ages; two-thirds was female. In all, 40.8% of them were dissatisfied with the appearance of their teeth. Although half of the group stated that the dentist will propose treatment if they visit a dentist, most of them did not think that the health of their teeth and gingiva was good. The percentage of dental visit at least once among females (94.2%) was more than males (82.8%) (p<0.001). Half of the students did not remember the age at first dental visit. 68.9% of the students had brushed their teeth at least twice a day. Improvements in preventive orientation of all health science students will also help them to play more effective roles in promoting the oral health of themselves as well as their communities.

Background: Cigarette smoking among youth has become a major public health problem in many developing countries like Bangladesh. Many smokers start smoking in their teens; then they become addicted and deepen the dependency during early adulthood, maintaining their smoking behaviour. Current literature from Bangladesh has not examined how peer effect, family influence and smoking-related knowledge impact smoking behaviour of the adolescent and young adults from the urban areas of the country. This study aims to fill this gap in the literature by investigating the smoking patterns of urban male adolescents and young adults in Bangladesh. The study aims to examine the family and peer influence on the behaviour of smoking of this population group. The study also explores how knowledge on harmful effects of smoking affects the participation decision of smoking by young adults and adolescents. Methods: This study is an educational institution-based cross-sectional study within the framework of the Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS). Primary data has been collected from a sample of 995 urban male students aged between 10-24 years living in the seven divisional headquarters of Bangladesh. We use logistic regression and count data regression models to examine how smoking is associated with different factors. Results: Our results suggest that a person is 45% more prone to smoke a cigarette if any of the family members is a smoker. The likelihood of smoking is about six times higher if he is offered a cigarette by his friend, whereas the likelihood of being a smoker is 15-fold if he has a smoker friend, as the findings reveal. However, institutional and family awareness are not significantly related to smoking. Conclusion: Strong evidence of peer and family effect on smoking initiation indicates the need for effective smoking-prevention intervention at the national level, specifically targeted at family and educational institutions. The findings are also relevant for other countries which share the similar characteristics of Bangladesh in terms of adolescent smoking determinants.

GirişDünya Sağlık Örgütü'nün (DSÖ) 10-19 yaş arası olarak tanımladığı ergenler, dünyadaki her beş kişiden birini oluşturur; ergenlerin yaklaşık %85'i gelişmemiş ülkelerde yaşar (1). Türkiye'de 2010 yılı Adrese Dayalı Nüfus Kayıt Sistemi verilerine göre ergen yaş grubu nüfusu 12.846.048 (%17,4) kişidir (2). Ülkemizin de içinde olduğu DSÖ Avrupa Bölgesi'nin 21. yüzyılda ulaşmayı amaçladığı "Öncelikli 21 Sağlık Hedefi" listesinde gençlerin sağlığının geliştirilmesi hedefi ilk sıralarda gelmektedir (3). DSÖ yetişkinlerdeki erken ölümlerin yaklaşık %70'ine ergenlik döneminde başlayan davranışların sebep olduğunu tahmin etmektedir (1). Örneğin erken yaşta sigaraya başlayan kişiler erişkin çağda daha sık sigaraya bağlı hastalıklara yakalanmakta ve ölmektedirler (4).Türkiye'de sigara içme sıklığı yetişkinlerde %33,4, gençlerde %6,9 dur (5). Yapılan çalışmalarda sigara bağımlısı olan erişkinlerin çoğunun bu alışkanlığı 18 yaşından önce kazandıkları saptanmıştır (6-8). Sigara firmaları bugünün ergenlerini yarının potansiyel müşterileri olarak görmektedir. Sigara epidemisi küresel bir fenomendir. Ergenlerde sigara içmeyi etkileyen sosyodemografik, kişisel ve çevresel etkiler gibi pek çok faktör bulunmaktadır (9). Okul yaşlarındaki çocuklarda sigara kullanımını sosyal öğrenme doğrudan etkilemektedir. Arkadaş baskısı, anne-baba ya da kardeşlerin sigara içimi, öğretmen, sanatçı, usta, sporcu gibi sevdikleri ve önemsedikleri kişilerin sigara içmele-Erciyes Med J 2012; 34(2): 79-84 • ABSTRACT ÖZETObjective: This study was designed to determine the levels of cigarette, alcohol and substance use among high school students in the Samsun provincial centre. Material and Method:The study population consisted of 26,707 students attending 40 high schools. Contact was established with 951 students, 92.7% of the study sample. "Youth Risk Behaviour Surveillance" survey questions were used in formulating the questionnaire. Results:Nine hundred and fifty-one students, 468 female (49.21%) and 483 male (50.79%), participated. Non-smoking among females (75.21%) was significantly higher than among males (64.39%). As students progressed through school, levels of smoking at least one cigarette and of smoking every day in the previous month increased significantly. Levels of using alcohol at least once and of drinking and intoxication in the preceding month were higher among male students. Levels of intoxication rose significantly with progress through school. The number of students stating that they had used any substance during their lives was 3.15%, and was significantly higher among males (4.55%) compared to females (1.70%). Conclusion:Smoking and alcohol and substance use are more common among males. This must be considered in deterrent campaigns targeting this age group.
