The Sleep Revolution project: the concept and objectives

Abstract: Summary Obstructive sleep apnea is linked to severe health consequences such as hypertension, daytime sleepiness, and cardiovascular disease. Nearly a billion people are estimated to have obstructive sleep apnea with a substantial economic burden. However, the current diagnostic parameter of obstructive sleep apnea, the apnea–hypopnea index, correlates poorly with related comorbidities and symptoms. Obstructive sleep apnea severity is measured by counting respiratory events, while other physiologically relevan… Show more

“…The software can be used with also other versions of the sleep recording software but as this has not been tested, the compatibility may vary. The SSRE software was developed for use in the Sleep Revolution project (EU Horizon 2020 5 ). During the project, the software was extensively tested by exporting thousands of sleep recordings from several partner sites.…”

“…In addition to internal testing, the SSRE software has already been deployed in the Sleep Revolution project 5 to aid in exporting and anonymizing over 10 000 sleep recordings from 12 different sleep centers across Europe. Depending on used the hardware and the type of the recording, the data export process for a single subject typically takes around 3–10 min.…”

“…Sleep is defined as a reversible suspension of the individual's sensory-motor interaction with the external environment. Pediatric sleep disorders create an interruption of the normal night sleep process and they are divided into the following categories: insomnia, sleep breathing disorders, hypersomnolence (narcolepsy), circadian sleep-wake rhythm disorders, para-somnias (pavor nocturnus, enuresis and somniloquio) and sleep-related movement disorders (75).…”

“…A major achievement for sleep medicine and research was the award in 2020 of a grant of EUR 15 million by the EU Horizon Programme for a European multicentre study of new approaches to the evaluation of patients suspected of SDB. The project, "Sleep Revolution", aims to develop machine learning tools to better estimate OSA severity and provide personalised treatment options including patient participation [14]. These tools will be implemented in high-end wearables to alleviate the costs and increase the availability of polysomnography.…”
