Scratching performed by aDJ(disk jockey)isaskillful style of playing the turntable with complexmusical output. This study focuses on the description of some of the acoustical parameters and playing strategies of typical scratch improvisations, and howt hese parameters typically are used for expressive performance. Three professional DJsw ere instructed to express different emotions through improvisations, and both audio and gestural data were recorded. Feature extraction and analysis of the recordings are based on ac ombination of audio and gestural data, instrument characteristics, and playing techniques. The acoustical and performance parameters extracted from the recordings give afirst approximation on the functional ranges within which DJsnormally play. Results from the analysis showthat parameters which are important for other solo instrument performances, such as pitch, have less influence in scratching. Both differences and commonalities between the DJs' playing styles were found. Impact that the findings of this work may have on constructing models for scratch performances are discussed. The "Analysis" section describes the steps in the data analysis and feature extraction, including mechanical, acoustical and performance-related features. In the "Results" section, the data from the feature extraction are presented and discussed, both with a general perspective and with af ocus on performance and expressive aspects. The paper finishes with some conclusive remarks on the feature extraction and data analysis, and also proposes some future directions.

El estudio contó con la participación de cincuenta de estos profesionales de diferentes regiones de Colombia, a quienes se les suministró una encuesta electrónica que indagaba acerca de los géneros musicales, los formatos de uso actual, las percepciones y sus posturas frente al ejercicio profesional. Finalmente, se postula una línea de investigación en el campo de la psicoacústica, cuyo fin es abordar un fenómeno que todavía no es objeto de los desarrollos tecnológicos. With a turnout of fifty respondents the sector on mention and different parts of Colombia, are collected personal data from said sample, genres, formats currently in use, perceptions, opinions and attitudes that facilitate professional success. Finally, a possible line of research is postulated in the field of psychoacoustics to address an empty space, which does not reach technological developments in the field.

Although digital media playback and storage have several advantages, many DJs still prefer using vinyl records on turntables due to their direct manipulation and haptic qualities. The physical structure of a traditional vinyl record provides important cues for in-track navigation, such as track length or location of loud and soft passages. Digital vinyl systems use a timecode record to combine the advantages of digital playback with the handling DJs are used to. These records contain a special audio signal that is processed by a computer and mapped to information such as playback speed, direction, and absolute position in a track. However, due to their generic nature, timecode records cannot provide visual information to navigate inside individual tracks. Using top-projection, DiskPlay augments a white timecode record with individual visual features of the medium, such as cue points or track start and end. In our observational study with four professional DJs, participants valued the co-location of visual feedback with the control vinyl on the turntable.
