The skill representation of a multimodal communication care method for people with dementia

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to describe the way to represent the skills in dementia care based on the multimodal communication analysis by a computational approach. With the rapid growth of an aging population, it is becoming extremely important to elucidate communication skills for improving the quality of life of the elderly. Focusing on the dementia care method by HUMANITUDE, we have analyzed dementia care skills to evaluate their effectiveness. We designed three layers for representing skills and named th… Show more

“…A series of experiments [23] were carried out using a bremsstrahlung photon beam from 1.20-GeV circulating electrons in a synchrotron [24] at ELPH. The photon beam is provided by inserting a carbon fiber into the circulating electrons [25,26].…”

“…Ishikawa et al developed an analysis and training system for interaction with PwDs where an annotator rated the quality of the skill elements (gaze, speech, touch, and comprehensibility) for a conversational video. Trainees learn current interaction behavior through the system’s visualized feedback ( Ishikawa et al, 2016 ).…”

“…Although many attempts have been made to obtain the aforementioned information by using third-person view videos, the videos were analyzed by video annotators. This required considerable cost and time and there was the risk of obtaining biased results caused by annotator subjectivity [21]. To address these problems, the contributions and limitations of this paper are as follows:…”

“…There are several approaches that use care skill quantization. In computer science, Ishikawa et al developed a method of care skill evaluation based on the knowledge of care experts [21]. They categorized care skills into three layers: intramodality, intermodality and multimodal-interaction.…”
