In recent decades, research into the quality of life has been carried out by scientists and political organizations. This article follows the European Union's call for a multidimensional approach to research into the quality of life. The article puts forward a novel concept for the quality of life, based on key domains and their respective indicators, as described in the available statistical data. Using multidimensional statistical methods, a synthetic quality of life index is constructed on the basis of the defined quality of life indicators, and a typology of European NUTS 2 is proposed. Linking these outputs and the visualisation that identified the main European regions allows us to evaluate living conditions in the context of the quality of life indicators. The results of our study show that the selected data express the differences in the quality of life in European administrative units and reflect the different development of individual areas in the second half of the 20th century.

The study presents the advantages of, and possible uses for, Orange software for data mining in combination with processing spatial data by ArcGIS Pro software in education. To present suitability of Orange software in education, the scientific method of Physics of Notation by D. Moody is used to evaluate the Orange software's visual vocabulary. All nine principles are applied in the presented evaluation. As a result, a high level of effective cognition of the Orange visual vocabulary is proven by this method. Namely, the semantic transparency of visual vocabulary, thanks the explicit inner icons, is semantically immediate. Also, principle of dual coding is used properly by automatic text labels of graphical symbols with the opportunity to rename labels. Renaming is also a way to ensure the partial overloading of symbols found by the first principle of semiotic clarity. The principle of cognitive interaction is partially fulfilled by automatically reorganizing connector lines between symbols to reduce the crossing of lines. A high level of effective cognition is beneficial for students. The evaluation of the visual notation of Orange software is presented to inform teachers and the geoinformatics community of the highly effective cognitive aspects of Orange software. The two practical lectures of processing in Orange and ArcGIS Pro software are shown to the teachers and students of geoinformatics community as examples of machine learning tasks. They are cluster analyses carried out with the density‐based spatial clustering of applications with noise method, first for the location of cafés in Olomouc town and the second example concerns finding similar European towns based on their land use arrangement, using the neural network and following hierarchical clustering. Both examples could provide inspiration for the geoinformatics community to adopt Orange data mining software.

Předměty Data Mining a Pokročilé zpracování geodat jsou povinnými předměty pro magisterské studium programu Geoinformatika a kartografie na Univerzitě Palackého. V praktických cvičeních se využívají data poskytovaná evropskými úřady. V obou předmětech jsou to data poskytovaná statistickým úřadem Evropské unie Eurostat a dále data poskytovaná Evropskou agenturou životního prostředí v programu Copernicus Land Monitoring Servise -Urban Atlas. Přínosem praktických cvičení je nejen procvičení různých metod analýzy, ale i seznámení se zdroji dat Evropské unie. Praktické příklady tak zvyšují znalost o geografických evropských tématech a možnostech získávání dat z volně dostupných zdrojů.V rámci předmětu Data Mining jsou procvičována témata korelace, analýza hlavních komponent, hierarchické a nehierarchické shlukování na datech zaměstnanosti podle číselníku ekonomické aktivity NACE Level1. Analýza časových řad je procvičována na datech železniční dopravy v zemích EU. Zajímavé je zjišťování trendu osobní dopravy v letech 2004 až 2021 v jednotlivých evropských zemích. Dále lze dobře zjistit kvartální změny z dat dopravy v důsledku pandemie COVID-19 v roce 2020 a 2021. Postupy hledání podobnosti jsou ukázány na datech Urban Atlasu. Navíc je procvičováno použití natrénovaných neuronových sítí pro zjištění podobnosti evropských měst podle landuse center měst. Závěrečný semestrální projekt je také postaven na evropských datech. Ve cvičení je používán data miningový software Orange, který vizuálním programovacím jazykem.Předmět Pokročilé zpracování geodat se zaměřuje především na témata související s prostorovou statistikou -nejprve provádí studenty metodami pokročilé exploratorní analýzy, dále jsou představeny prostorově vážené metody, na které navazuje využití prostorových regresních modelů. Druhou část sylabu tvoří využití metod geocomputation, ve které se studenti seznámí s tématy fuzzy logiky, teorie informace a fraktální geometrie a jejich využití v prostoru. Pro cvičení jsou využívány regionální statistiky NUTS2 z databáze Eurostat a databáze OECD.Výukové texty jako je učebnice software Orange (Dobešová, 2022) a příklady k samostatnému procvičení nad daty EU jsou volně dostupné včetně zdrojových dat a programových kódů na stránce projektu http://urbandm.upol.cz/ v sekci Výukové materiály.
