“…We also do not include all species that Chatterton & Campbell (1980) placed in Apocalymene. Instead, we only assign Apocalymene coppinsensis Chatterton & Campbell, 1980 (the type species), Apocalymene australis (Etheridge & Mitchell, 1917) and Apocalymene quadrilobata (Chatterton, 1971) to Gravicalymene, whilst questionably placing Apocalymene angustior (Chapman, 1915) in the genus. This last species is problematic to evaluate as the cranidia figured are highly distorted and incomplete.…”

“…The long temporal range of Gravicalymene concerned Chatterton & Campbell (1980), as it is unusually protracted for a trilobite genus. Currently there are Late Ordovician -Early Devonian species described from Avalonia, Baltica and Laurentia (e.g., Shirley 1936, Stumm & Kauffman 1958, Dean 1962, 1963, Van ek 1965, Ross 1967, Haas 1968, Alberti 1969, Schrank 1970, Ingham 1977, McNamara 1979, Ross 1979, Snajdr 1981, Price 1982 and from the early Silurian-Devonian of East Gondwana (e.g., Chapman 1915, Gill 1945, Etheridge & Mitchell 1917, Chatterton 1971, Chatterton et al 1979, Chatterton & Campbell 1980, Holloway & Neil 1982, Holloway 1994, Sandford 2000, Edgecombe & Wright 2004, Zhou & Zhen 2008 and references therein). The species reported herein is the first (and only) species known from the Ordovician of East Gondwana, although there are likely others that remain undescribed.…”

“…nov. and Acidaspidinae indet. Previous treatment of the fauna (McCoy 1876; Etheridge & Mitchell 1892, 1916, 1917Gregory 1901;Chapman 1912Chapman , 1915Gill 1945Gill , 1949Talent 1964;Strusz 1980;Holloway & Neil 1982;and Edgecombe & Chatterton 1992) is restricted to studies of very small populations from only half of the species present. The present study examines all available specimens in the collections of the Museum of Victoria, consisting of around 1500 trilobite specimens from approximately 200 localities.…”
