The Silent Run: New Issues and Outcomes for University-Industry Relations in Brazil

Abstract: In order to develop innovations, companies are establishing University-Industry (U-I) relations which are explained in theories like the Triple Helix. Maybe this traditional view it is not enough to describe what happens in Brazil. Followed by a growth of articles published internationally, companies in technologically stable industries seem to be incorporating high-tech outcomes from universities, boosting sectors that once were apparently inert. This research will propose a different approach on U-I relation… Show more

“…Assim, as organizações que apresentam maiores níveis de absorção permitem que haja fluxo de conhecimento e desse modo, tornam-se mais inovadoras, porque conseguem explorar conhecimentos internos e externos eficientemente (Escribano, Fosfuri, & Tribó, 2009). Desse modo, a capacidade absortiva faz com que as organizações se qualifiquem e gerem produtos inovadores (Zawislak, & Dalmarco, 2011).…”

“…Research on University-Industry relation is a different tale from academic-corporate collaboration. In terms of net output, while 23 documents on the relation between University-Industry/Enterprise/Firm have been published since 2000s (e.g., Sutz, 2000;Zawislak & Dalmarco, 2011) only seven have been published with at least one co-author affiliated with a corporation since 2014 (e.g., Cirera et al, 2015;Przychodzen et al, 2016). An interesting aspect to be highlighted on the academic-corporate collaboration, is that regardless of the little involvement of corporate organizations as co-authors, those organizations figured as either one of the biggest firms in the sub-continent (i.e., Petrobras), a national bank (i.e., Central Bank of Chile), or major multinational companies (i.e., Accenture).…”

“…Of no less importance, the innovative company is not alone in this endeavor. Innovation is a process in which interaction with customers, suppliers, research institutions, engineering firms, professional training services, and technological and research institutions' services have significant meaning, whether as a source of information or more formalized by means of cooperation agreements (Closs et al, 2012;Suzigan, 2011;Zawislak and Dalmarco, 2011;Carvalho 2010). Therefore, the opportunities offered by the virtuous aspects (or not) of the National (and local) Innovation Systems, including their regulatory size and industrial and technological policies, feature prominently in this approach.…”
