The significance of Upper Permian brachiopods from Merapuh area, northwest Pahang

Abstract: Several localities of Upper Permian brachiopod dominated shelly fauna have been discovered from the Merapoh area in northwest Pahang. The fauna consists of more than forty species offree living and pedunculate brachiopods, associated with other benthic elements such as bivalves, gastropods, fenestrate and stony bryozoans, solitary rugose corals, trilobites etc. Most of the fossils are preserved as moulds and casts, but they show very good biocoenosis assemblages. The brachiopods assemblages belong to the Upper… Show more

“…The Gua Panjang hill is made up of carbonates (limestone and dolostone) (Figure 3) while the surrounding low-lying area is predominantly made up of mudstone and shale, often highly tuffaceous (Leman, 1993;. The limestone bed strikes in the NNW-SSE direction and dips 30°SW, suggesting that the Gua Panjang limestone praeparvus, H. postparvus, H. eurypge, and Isarcicella staeschi ( Figure 6).…”

“…The Middle Permian to Late Triassic age of the Gua Musang formation and its lateral equivalents were determined based on fossil findings. Among them are Middle Permian fauna in Sungai Toh, Sungai Yu, and Padang Tengku (Leman, 1993;Campi et al, 2000Campi et al, , 2002Campi et al, , 2005; Upper Permian fossils in Terenggun, Merapoh, Penjom, and Padang Tengku (Hussin, 1990(Hussin, , 1994Leman, 1991Leman, , 1993Leman, , 1994Abdullah, 1993;Lim & Abdullah, 1994;Fontaine & Amnan, 1994;; Lower Triassic conodonts and bivalves in Merapoh, Chegar Perah, Gua Sei and Aring (Igo et al, 1966;Tamura, 1968Tamura, , 1973Aw, 1990;Metcalfe, 1992Metcalfe, , 1995; Middle Triassic fauna in Jerus, Gua Bama, Felda Aring, and Merapoh (Metcalfe, 1990; Fontaine & Amnan, 1994; Sone & Leman, 2004; (Aw, 1990). “…The Penjom gold deposit lies within the western margin of the Central Belt (gold belt 3). The Central Belt consists mainly of Permo-Triassic, low-grade metasediments, deep to shallow marine clastic sediments and limestone with abundant intermediate to acid volcanics and volcaniclastics, deposited in a paleo-arc basin ( Richardson, 1939;Proctor, 1972;Gobbett & Hutchison, 1973;Leman, 1994;Metcalfe, 2002 ). Batholiths in the Eastern Belt are smaller than those of Sibumasu, but are, in comparison, compositionally expanded.…”

Underlying this unit in the western fl ank is the older Sungai Sergis Formation, which is composed of a thick sequence of shale with very minor limestone intercalation and much thicker bands of tuff containing fragments of both rhyolite and andesite ( Scrivenor, 1928( Scrivenor, , 1931Richardson, 1939;Alexander, 1949;Nancy, 1972;Proctor, 1972;Gobbett & Hutchison, 1973;Nuraiteng, 1993;Leman, 1994;Campi et al , 2002 ).…”
