The Significance of Chloroplast NAD(P)H Dehydrogenase Complex and Its Dependent Cyclic Electron Transport in Photosynthesis

Abstract: Chloroplast NAD(P)H dehydrogenase (NDH) complex, a multiple-subunit complex in the thylakoid membranes mediating cyclic electron transport, is one of the most important alternative electron transport pathways. It was identified to be essential for plant growth and development during stress periods in recent years. The NDH-mediated cyclic electron transport can restore the over-reduction in stroma, maintaining the balance of the redox system in the electron transfer chain and providing the extra ATP needed for … Show more

“…However, there would be insufficient ATP from the LET during certain multiple stress situations. Plants could compensate for the deficiency of ATP/NADPH in the LET by using the CET around the PSI ( Sato et al, 2019 ; Ma et al, 2021 ), the water-water cycle (Mehler reaction; Asada et al, 1999 ) and the mitochondrial alternative oxidase respiration ( Meng et al, 2012 ).…”

“…It is not clear if a similar redox-state induced phenomenon occurs also in red algae. If it is the case it is likely to be connected with one of the chloroplast NAD(P)H dehydrogenases (Ma et al, 2021). Experiments are underway to address this issue.…”

“…The cyclic electron transport (CET) process is involved in chloroplast energy regulation and redox metabolism, which is particularly important for photosynthesis. The studies demonstrated that CET has two pathways, PGR5/PGRL1-mediated pathway and the NDH-mediated pathway ( Johnson et al., 2014 ; Ma et al., 2021a ). The protein interaction between CAS and PGRL1 was confirmed in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii , indicating that there is a link between CAS and CET ( Terashima et al., 2012 ; Ma et al., 2021b ).…”
