The “sick but slick” syndrome as a personality component of parents of battered children

Abstract: Thirteen parents convicted in court of battering their children and 13 matched controls were administered a battery of personality tests, with significant differences obtained on 5 of 21 study variables. “…In addition, male and female abusers show different personality characteristics, suggesting that separate consideration be given to describing male and female abusers. While these results also support Wright's (1976) finding of psychopathic traits in abusive parents, it must be noted that none of the scales exceeded the t score of 70, the usual cut-off for evidence of psychopathology.…”

“…For instance, with the ex post facto studies concerning MMPI scores of maltreating and nonmaltreating parents (e.g., Paulson et al, 1976;Wright, 1976) there is a danger of interpreting differences in profiles between groups to imply that maltreating parents are "sick" and that this sickness "causes" them to maltreat. The logic is circular (Parke & Collmer, 1975).…”

“…Cependant, il est encore impossible de déterminer si la faible estime de soi et la dépression sont des conséquences découlant du dévoilement ou des causes de l'abus. Par contre, plusieurs études ne présentent aucune différence significative entre le groupe d'abuseurs et le groupe contrôle quant à de multiples mesures d'attributs ou de traits de personnalité (Gaines et al, 1978;Starr, 1982;Wright, 1976).…”

“…Child batterers, as a whole, display a "sick but slick syndrome," presenting a picture of themselves as healthy and unlikely to abuse their children, even though most of them may be characterized by psychopathic tendencies (Wright, 1976). Adolescents suffering from a high degree of abuse could be characterized with significantly higher levels of dependency, suicidality, violence, impulsivity, substance abuse problems, and borderline tendencies (Grilo, Sanislow, Febon, Martino, et al, 1999).…”
