The shorter zinc finger protein ZNF230 gene message is transcribed in fertile male testes and may be related to human spermatogenesis

Abstract: The zinc finger gene family represents one of the largest in the mammalian genome, with several of these genes reported to be involved in spermatogenesis. A newly discovered gene has been identified that is expressed abundantly in the testicular tissue of fertile men as determined by mRNA differential display. The gene encodes a C(3)HC(4)-type zinc finger protein motif (ring finger motif) consistent with a role in pre-meiotic or post-meiotic sperm development. The gene was named ZNF230 and mapped to the short … Show more

“…The ZNF230 gene, for example, encodes two different transcripts: the longer one of 4.4 kb is ubiquitously expressed, whereas the shorter form of 1 kb is detected only in the testis [73]. Interestingly, this latter form is absent in foetal testis and azoospermic patients, suggesting that ZNF230 might work in maintaning normal human male fertility.…”

“…This was submitted to GenBank (accession number: AY621088). Previous studies have shown that human ZNF230 has two transcripts ( Zhang et al , 2001 ). In mouse, there are three transcripts of znf230 ( Qiu et al 2003 ).…”

“…This suggested that ZNF230 may be involved in spermatogenesis, and loss of its expression may lead to azoospermia (Zhang et al , 2001). But so far, no clear biological function and mechanism had been elucidated.…”

“…The human gene ZNF230 (also named RNF141 ), which encodes a type of RING (Really Interesting New Gene) finger protein, was first identified in our laboratory to be restrictively expressed in the testicular tissue of fertile men ( Zhang et al , 2001 ). RING finger proteins, a sub-family of zinc finger proteins (ZFP), often contain the cysteine-rich CX 2 CX (9–39) CX (1–3) HX (2–3) CX 2 CX (4–48) CX 2 C domain and are involved in a variety of biological processes, including transcriptional regulation, signal transduction, cell apoptosis and protein ubiquitination ( Borden, 2000 ; Joazeiro and Weissman, 2000 ).…”
