The Shortened Raven Standard Progressive Matrices

Abstract: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of a shortened version of the Raven Standard Progressive Matrices (SPM) under an item response theory framework (the one- and two-parameter logistic models). The shortened Raven SPM was administered to N = 453 cognitively healthy adults aged between 24 and 83 years. The IQ point estimates that were obtained under the one- and two-parameter logistic models were very similar (r = .97), but the two-parameter logistic-based test version h… Show more

“…This test resembles the Matrix Reasoning used in our study, but performance of Ravens Progressive Matrices is known to be adversely correlated to age and female sex [48]. The discrepancy may thus be partly due to the predominance of young male subjects in our cohort as compared to previous reports where older and more female subjects were included.…”

“…In order to rule out any artifacts due to intelligence (Silvia and Beaty, 2012; Lee and Therriault, 2013), all participants underwent the Raven progressive matrices test (Raven and Raven, 2008). We used the shorten version of the RSPM, which has recently been shown by Van der Elst et al (2013) to be a short valid method to assess intelligence, while taking into consideration age and gender effects on RSPM performance. This shortened version includes only series B, C and D of the original RSPM (Van der Elst et al, 2013).…”

“…Unlike other intelligence tests, SPM is independent from language, reading and writing skills. As a result of these characteristics, it minimizes cultural bias [ 19 ]. This standardized intelligence test evaluates the ability to think clearly and extract meaning out of events; it includes 60 items presented in 5 sets, with 12 items per set.…”
