The Short-EMBU in Australia, Spain, and Venezuela

Abstract: Abstract. The short(s)-EMBU (Swedish acronym for Egna Minnen Beträffande Uppfostran [My memories of upbringing]) consists of 23 items, is based on the early 81-item EMBU, and was developed out of the necessity of having a brief measure of perceived parental rearing practices when the clinical and/or research context does not adequately permit application of time-consuming test batteries. The s-EMBU comprises three subscales: Rejection, Emotional Warmth, and (Over)Protection. The factorial and/or construct vali… Show more

“…The short version of the EMBU [Arrindell et al, 1999], with eight items in the maternal rejection scale to be answered on a four-point Likert scale, was used. The adequacy of the psychometric properties of this short version is well established in the literature [Arrindell et al, 2001[Arrindell et al, , 2005Arrindell and Engebretsen, 2000;Winefield et al, 1990]. Cronbach's a for the maternal rejection scale was .77.…”

“…Reliability test was carried out to ensure the study achieved accurate representation of the total population under study (Joppe, 2000;Kirk & Miller, 1986;Golafshani, 2003). The Table shows Validity tests were carried out to ensure that the research truly measured that which it was intended to measure and presented truth in the research results (Golafshani, 2003;Lewis and Ritchie, 2003;DeRue et al, 2012;Arrindell et al, 2005). A principal component factor analysis was performed on all the items of the constructs in the study, using extraction with varimax rotation, in order to assess factor loadings for each variable and to achieve a simplified structure of the factors.…”

“…The main model was a six-factor model with three factors representing three parts for the father’s parenting style and another three factors for the mother’s parenting style. Previous studies reported findings on cross-loadings of item OF4_9/OM4_9 on emotional warmth and overprotection 19,21. These cross-loadings were also specified in the tested models.…”
