“…Despite the lack of mature shovelnose inside the FTB, adult elasmobranchs are known to use bays and estuaries seasonally for mating and pupping (Castro 1993;Simpfendorfer and Milward 1993;Pratt and Carrier 2001). Adult shovelnose have been found during the summer in bays and estuaries in California (Talent 1985) and Baja California (Salazar-Hermoso and Villavicencio-Garayzar 1999), but their presence in these areas was predominantly during summer.…”

“…Temperature was the driving factor for the movement of Sandbar Sharks into nurseries in both Delaware (Merson and Pratt 2001) and Chesapeake bays (Grubbs et al 2007). Similarly, Castro (1993) and Ulrich et al (2007) documented the presence of sharks in South Carolina estuaries after water temperatures reached ∼19-20 • C. Increasing shark abundance at higher temperatures is also expected. In the coastal waters of Texas, Froeschke et al (2010) showed that shark catch rates increased as temperatures increased between 20 • C and 30 • C, a trend also seen in the present study.…”

“…Of particular importance in their role as EFH are nearshore estuarine and marine ecosystems (e.g., seagrass meadows, marshes, and mangroves) that serve as nursery habitats, providing a selective advantage for juveniles. For sharks, this may include increased prey abundance and decreased risk (Branstetter 1990;Castro 1993), both of which would have obvious benefits for survival and overall population growth.…”

“…The total length (TL, in cm) and sex of each shark was recorded, together with the degree of maturity, based on the scale described by Castro (1993). Muscle tissue samples (0.5 g) were taken from the antero-dorsal portion of live sharks, preserved in the tissue preservative All protect tissue reagent (Qiagen) at a concentration of 100 mL per 10 mg of muscle, and stored in the laboratory at -50°C until analyzed.…”
