The shape and arrangement of the cholinergic neurons in the rabbit retina

Abstract: The acetylcholine-synthesizing neurons of the rabbit retina were selectively stained by intraocular injection of the fluorescent dye 4, 6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAP1). Retinas were then isolated from the eye, fixed for 10-30 min with 4% paraformaldehyde, and mounted flat on the stage of a fluorescence microscope. The acetylcholine-synthesizing cells were penetrated under visual control by microelectrodes filled with lucifer yellow CH. When the dye was electrophoretically injected into the cells, complete fi… Show more

“…In contrast, a different type of amacrine cell branching only in the off-sublamina may mediate the spatially offset inhibition that distinguishes the offresponses from the on-responses. A change in the timing of the off-inhibition in the preferred and null directions predicts a spatial offset of ϳ160 m, which is approximately half the dendritic diameter of a starburst cell in mid-peripheral retina (Tauchi and Masland, 1984;Vaney, 1984).…”

“…Type a cells have perikarya in the inner nuclear layer, processes ramifying in the outer half of the inner plexiform layer (IPL) in stratum 2 (S2) and OFF responses to light. Type b cells have perikarya displaced to the ganglion cell layer, processes ramifying in stratum 4 (S4) of the IPL and ON responses to light (Famiglietti, 1983;Tauchi and Masland, 1984;Vaney, 1984;Bloomfield and Miller, 1986). In rabbits, starburst amacrine cells are known to receive synaptic inputs from cone (Brandon, 1987;Millar and Morgan, 1987;Famiglietti, 1991).…”

“…Cholinergic amacrine cells, also known as starburst amacrine cells due to their unique morphology, form two mirror symmetric populations on either side of the inner plexiform layer (Vaney, 1984;Tauchi & Masland, 1984;Rodieck & Marshak, 1992). The cells in the inner nuclear layer produce OFF responses and stratify in sublamina a while the displaced starburst amacrine cells are ON cells branching in sublamina b.…”
