Regional integration has been the most pronounced phenomenon of the last decade of 20th century. The end of cold war witnessed the emergence of many regional organizations. The Asian continent also didn’t lag behind rather follow suit and established several regional organizations. The-then Shanghai Five also emerged in order to discuss and deal with the border issues of the member states but with the changing scenario at international level it has evolved and broadened its agenda to discuss extra-regional affairs which are directly or indirectly hampering the progress of the region. This paper is an attempt to analyze relevance and evolution of the contemporary Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) through analytical prism of neo-functionalism. The paper takes into account the constructivist paradigm for regional integration and uses qualitative means to measure the relevance of the organization in an age of regionalization.

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) was founded as the "Shanghai Five" in 1996, and since becoming the SCO in 2001, it has made significant progress in a number of fields, especially in the areas of security and the economy. At the 17th Astana summit, Pakistan's accession to the SCO has further highlighted the strategic significance of the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). The aim of this study is to examine the potential features of the CPEC regional connectivity between South Asia, Central Asia, and the Middle East, as well as its numerous positive outcomes for its members. This research is not only a review of the literature, but also an in-depth understanding of the primary sources. Primary data has been gathered while using a qualitative research methodology. Further, a semi-structured interview approach is used in which 20 participants have been interviewed. The study findings suggest that the CPEC is an exceptional economic corridor that sets it apart from other corridors in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), providing promising prospects for SCO member states in terms of regional connectivity, enhanced economic cooperation, and energy corridor development in the future.

Nepal, a landlocked country situated between two nuclear states, has found bandwagoning with either China or India to be an impractical option. In the current scenario, Nepal has opted for a trend of hedging with both neighbors while adhering to a non-alignment foreign policy. Nepal aims to seek economic and infrastructure development opportunities from Beijing through initiatives like the Belt and Road Initiative, which could help overcome geopolitical challenges. However, India is concerned about Nepal's growing relations with China, viewing it as a significant threat to India's interests in Nepal. Nepal remains committed to the principles of non-alignment in its foreign policy objectives. India perceives Nepal's current trend of hedging as a potential path toward future bandwagoning with China, given China's superior capabilities compared to India.
