The SF-36 Offers a Strong Measure of Mental Health Symptoms in Survivors of Acute Respiratory Failure. A Tri-National Analysis

Abstract: Rationale: Survivors of acute respiratory failure commonly experience long-term psychological sequelae and impaired quality of life. For researchers interested in general mental health, using multiple condition-specific instruments may be unnecessary and inefficient when using the Medical Outcomes Study Short Form (SF)-36, a recommended outcome measure, may suffice. However, relationships between the SF-36 scores and commonly used measures of psychological symptoms in acute survivors of respiratory failure are… Show more

“…Scores were transformed so that the resulting scale ranged from 0 to 100, with higher scores indicating better mental health. The MHI-5 is closely associated with other widely used indicators of depression and anxiety, and a cut-off score of 52 has been suggested as a clinically meaningful indicator of major depression (Crosier, Butterworth, & Rodgers, 2007;Pfoh et al, 2016;Rumpf, Meyer & Hapke & John, 2001).…”

“…Physiologically, exercises increase the release of endorphins which in turn improves circulation and has an impact on a hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis which collectively improves the physiological reactivity to stress. [ 9 ] Hence, this could have improved the scores of MCS which corresponds to the anxiety and depression status (r = 0.88)[ 10 ] of the participants in the study group. Another reason for this improvement could be the better physical functional status of the patients in the study group.…”

“…In a recent study evaluating measures of health-related QoL, substantial gaps in the coverage of important aspects of survivorship were reported, including finances, place of residence, appearance and personality [12]. The 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) demonstrated a moderate to strong correlation with anxiety and depression symptoms from specific psychological screening tools, but with a low specificity for mental health disorders [13]. The authors noted that because negative predictive values were high, the best use of the SF-36 in studies is to help rule out patients with mental health disorders.…”
