The Serum Levels of the Soluble Factors sCD40L and CXCL1 Are Not Indicative of Endometriosis

Abstract: Endometriosis is a benign but troublesome gynecological condition, characterized by endometrial-like tissue outside the uterine cavity. Lately, the discovery and validation of noninvasive diagnostic biomarkers for endometriosis is one of the main priorities in the field. As the disease elicits a chronic inflammatory reaction, we focused our interest on two factors well known to be involved in inflammation and neoplastic processes, namely, soluble CD40 Ligand and CXCL1, and asked whether differences in the seru… Show more

“…Therefore, CXCL1 was considered as a predictor of ovarian cancer response to chemotherapy. Similarly to our study, it was also reported that the serum level of CXCL1 was not increased in endometriosis patients [ 35 ]. It is known that CXCL1 exerts multiple effects directly on the cancer cells as well as on stromal cells such as fibroblasts and immune cells promoting tumor development, progression, and metastasis [ 2 ].…”

“…CXCL1 levels in the endometrium are elevated in patients with endometriosis [201,202] and adenomyosis [203]. On the other hand, blood CXCL1 levels in patients with endometriosis are not altered [204]. Additionally, an increase in CXCL1 expression in the endometrium appears to only occur in some patients [205].…”

“…The published data from others and our own experience have shown that a disadvantage of the hypothesis-driven approach is that it normally focuses on a narrow aspect of the disease, which can often lead to a negative outcome. 34,38 For example, in the Cochrane Review by Gupta et al. 38 from 54 studies included in the systematic analysis, 31 studies evaluating 77 different biomarkers for endometriosis have shown negative outcome of initial hypothesis and could not distinguish women with and without endometriosis.…”
