The seroepidemiology of B. pertussis infection in Catalonia, Spain

Abstract: A survey of the seroprevalence of pertussis antibodies in a representative sample of the population from Catalonia was carried out. Ninety-seven municipalities and 30 schools were randomly selected to recruit the 2126 subjects who participated in the study. A serum sample was obtained from all individuals participating in the study in order to determine levels of pertussis toxin (PT) and filamentous hemagglutinin (FHA) antibodies by ELISA test. Sociodemographic data were collected for all subjects. The prevale… Show more

“…IgG antibodies to Bordetella pertussis were detected in 70.2% of the sera tested. These seropositivity numbers are similar to those reported in a study that was performed in Catalonia in 1996 33 but are significantly higher than those obtained in other studies conducted nationally. 34,35 With regard to age distribution (Fig.…”

“…The methods applied in the present study can be regarded as internationally accepted assays for immunological proof of immunity to tetanus [29] and diphtheria [32]. The ELISA technique has also been used in several seroepidemiological studies of B. pertussis [9]. However, antibordetella antibodies can not to be considered a protective correlate for pertussis.…”

“…In addition to a reassessment of vaccination in 4-6 year-old children, a booster dose of an acellular pertussis vaccine in adolescents and/or adults is recommended (20,21). Further studies are needed to evaluate the levels of pertussis antibodies in different age groups in other parts of the country to plan a national programme for pertussis booster vaccination.…”
