The septal body revisited

Abstract: The present study determined the morphometric characteristics of the septal body as well as its location and surface area. The intimate relationship of the septal body to the internal nasal valve and the histological characteristics of its mucosa should stimulate research into its potential role in modifying nasal airflow pattern and resistance, and its role in changing the humidity and temperature of the inspiratory air stream.

“…[4][5][6][7] In a radiologic study, the average total width of the SB was measured as 9.3 mm (SD ¼ 1.7) and contralateral to the deviation side, the SB was found to be more prominent 13 and was found smaller in women than in men. 14 In the current study, the total width of the SB was measured as 8.3 AE 2.5 mm (minimum-maximum 4.2-16 mm) and the SB was found to be larger on the contralateral side to the septal deviation as in the previously cited study.…”

“…4 The SB has been reported to be a component of expansile vasculer tissues of the nasal cavity. [4][5][6][7] Nasal airflow is regulated mainly by nasal turbinates and the IT plays an important role in the regulation of nasal resistance. 1 Unilateral IT hypertrophy contralateral to the septal deviation side is a common finding previously described as compensatory hypertrophy.…”

“…This method allowed us to quantify the overall size of the septum, while mitigating the effects of variation in the thickness of the cartilage and overlying mucosa (e.g. Elwany et al. 2009).…”
