The sensory ecology of primate food perception, revisited

Abstract: Twenty years ago, Dominy and colleagues published “The sensory ecology of primate food perception,” an impactful review that brought new perspectives to understanding primate foraging adaptations. Their review synthesized information on primate senses and explored how senses informed feeding behavior. Research on primate sensory ecology has seen explosive growth in the last two decades. Here, we revisit this important topic, focusing on the numerous new discoveries and lines of innovative research. We begin by… Show more

“…As also pointed out by various authors (e.g. Smith and Evans 2013;Leonard and Masek 2014;Valenta et al 2015;Wilke et al 2017;Veilleux et al 2022), our results highlight the importance of a multimodal perspective, as examining single modalities may be insufficient to explain behavioral decisions. How such multisensory interactions guide behavior in a feeding or other contexts requires further studies and across a wider range of species to understand how (socio)ecological traits shape sensory ecology.…”

“…Vision and olfaction have been suggested to be the main senses in primate foraging ecology (e.g. Dominy 2004;Rushmore et al 2012;Veilleux et al 2022). Most diurnal primates are strongly visually oriented animals (see overview in Veilleux et al 2022).…”

“…Despite a greater focus on the visual ecology of nocturnal primates over the past several decades (Veilleux et al, 2022), there remains a lack of research into the sensory ecology of primate foraging, in particular the importance of olfaction (Nevo & Heymann, 2015; Phillips et al, 2004). Diet is a strong selective pressure for sensory adaptations, and frugivorous primates exhibit behavioral and morphological traits that reflect a strong reliance on olfaction (Veilleux et al, 2022). However, olfaction also appears to play a critical role in the detection of insect prey in Aotus .…”

“…However, our results highlight the importance of recognizing that senses are multifaceted and that different proxies may measure different dimensions of a given sense (e.g. threshold sensitivity versus discrimination versus breadth of stimuli [72]). The relationships between different dimensions within a sense, anatomical proxies, and the roles of that sense during foraging are likely far more complex than often acknowledged.…”
