Two of the papers published in this book (cf. Tetereva/Naukhatskaia and Kim/Scharf/Šimko) present results of two subsequent international cooperation projects funded by the CENTRAL network in 2016 and 2017, namely the CENTRAL-Kollegs Empirical perspectives on area-typological aspects of language contact and language change and From language contrast to language contact: Corpus linguistic approaches to language contact phenomena. This format for research based-learning aimed at junior researchers and students. Under the guidance of junior researchers, student research teams developed and carried out short-time research projects. International audienceThis study addresses the methodological problem of result falsification in Cognitive Semantics, specifically in the descriptive analysis of semasiological variation, or “polysemy.” It argues that manually analysed corpus data can be used to describe models of semantic structure. The method proposed is quantified, permitting repeat analysis. The operationalisation of a semasiological structure employed in the study takes the principle of semantic features and applies them to a contextual analysis of usage-events, associated with the lexeme under scrutiny. The feature analysis, repeated on a large collection of occurrences, results in a set of metadata that constitutes the usage-profile of the lexeme. Multivariate statistics are then employed to identify patterns in those metadata. The case study examines 500 occurrences of the English lexeme annoy. Three basic senses are identified as well as a more complex array of semantic variations linked to morpho-syntactic context of usage

This paper uses the terminology of Construction Grammar (Goldberg 1996; 2006) and a corpus-based method to investigate a pair of semantically similar constructions and the lexemes that occur in both of them. The method, referred to as distinctive-collexeme analysis (Gries and Stefanowitsch 2004a), seeks to identify lexemes that exhibit a strong preference for one construction as opposed to another: in other words, to uncover subtle distributional differences between two semantically or functionally near-equivalent constructions. On the basis of the case study dealing with the on the brink of- noun construction versus the on the verge of- noun construction, the paper shows that there are lexemes that prefer one of the investigated patterns over the other. Moreover, the results of the distinctive-collexeme analysis reveal that the frame-constructional semantics is a relevant factor in the choice between these two patterns.
