Abstract: This article describes the traditional model of human psychological functioning which dominates current theorizing, contrasts it with the new, emerging perspective of self-organizing processes, and applies this new approach to a theory of human psychological functioning. In the traditional model there is an assumption that processes of functioning are discretely different from physical structure. This assumption is shown to be intrinsic to a linear conceptual framework which implies that (a) stability of funct… Show more

“…The notion of autopoiesis can be found in, for example, anthropology, psychology, psychiatry, political science, and organization science (see e.g. Escobar, 1994;Kickert, 1993;Boscolo & Bertrando, 1992;Dobuzinskis, 1992; In 't Veld e t al., 1992;Lyddon & McLaughlin, 1992;Ciompi, 1991;Kaplan & Kaplan, 1991;Rosseel & Van Engeland, 1991;Smith & Gemmil, 1991;van Steenbergen, 1990). Also, autopoiesis has given rise to the characterization of law as an autopoietic system (Teubner, 1988), and has played a major role in the field of the so-called second-order cybernetics (Harnden, 1990;Geyer & van der Zouwen, 1986).…”

“…Chaos theory has also found useful and growing applications in a variety of areas of the behavioral sciences (Kaplan & Kaplan, 1991;Kelso & Fogel, 1987), including psychotherapy (Chamberlain, 1989;McCown & Johnson, 1992). An excellent introduction to chaos theory for psychologists is presented by Marks-Tarlow (chapter 7, this volume).…”
