Endodontics procedures are difficult and complicated that most of the practitioners would encounter. Therefore, dental students should gain their confidence and competent during their training. This research aimed to study the perception of final year students on confidence level regarding endodontic treatments from all public universities and their opinions on the quality of endodontic education. A Google Form was used to disseminate an online questionnaire to all dental students from public universities across Malaysia. The survey included both scaled answer and open-ended questions. 184 responses out of 235 students, were obtained (response rate = 78%). Perception of competence and confidence were significantly greater amongst the students from research-based universities group (P < 0.05). 93.5% (n=179) of participants agree that they were confident to do endodontic procedure on anterior tooth, whilst on posterior tooth, only 75.5% (n=139) were confident. Only 6.5 percent of participants (n = 12) did not feel confident doing root canal treatment on single-rooted teeth, but 76.1 percent (n = 140) did not feel competent performing root canal treatment on multirooted teeth. Over 90% of the students rated the quality and the amount of time spent on endodontic education were adequate at their respective university as ?5 on a Likert scale (1 = inadequate to 10 = adequate). In addition, when they were asked to give the suggestion on how to improve the quality of endodontic education, 10.9% of the students suggested to increase the number of practical session and to do regular discussion regarding endodontic cases. It is vital to improve undergraduate endodontic education in order to raise students' perceptions of their confidence and competence when doing root canal therapy.

Background This study aimed to determine the confidence of senior dental students in Qassim University’s undergraduate dentistry program in Saudi Arabia regarding their capacity to perform endodontic procedures. The study’s objective was to pinpoint areas of weakness and offer suggestions for potential improvement of endodontic and clinical training for dental students. Methodology Using anonymous survey forms, 120 senior dental students were surveyed. Students’ self-reported levels of confidence in performing various endodontic procedures, such as periapical radiographs, rubber dam placement, endodontically treated tooth restoration, anesthesia, broken instrument removal, and endodontic retreatment, were studied in this survey. A Likert-style rating scale of 1 to 5 was used in the survey, with 1 denoting high confidence and 5 denoting low confidence. Results The majority of senior dental students at Qassim University reported high levels of confidence in taking periapical radiographs, with 64.04% indicating a high level of confidence. The second most assured field was rubber dam installation, with 47.6% of students expressing high levels of assurance. Confidence levels were noticeably lower during more difficult procedures such as endodontic retreatment and the removal of broken instruments. While 12% of students expressed high confidence in endodontic retreatment, only 3.46% of students expressed high confidence in removing broken instruments. According to Pearson’s correlation (r = 0.352, p = 0.001), there was a significant and favorable correlation between competency level and confidence in performing various endodontic procedure-related steps. Conclusions The study’s findings suggest that senior dentistry students at Qassim University might benefit from additional training and assistance in some endodontic treatment areas. The lack of confidence displayed during more challenging procedures, such as the removal of broken instruments and endodontic retreatment, demonstrates the need for additional training and supervision in such cases. The results of this study may be useful for educators in other dental colleges who wish to consider developing new teaching techniques, utilizing simulators and digital learning tools, and increasing opportunities for hands-on training and supervision to improve dental students’ self-confidence and skills.

Resumen: Objetivo: El presente estudio tuvo como objetivo recopilar información de estudiantes de último año y nuevos pasantes inscritos en la Facultad de Odontología, Universidad de Ciencia y Tecnología (UST), con respecto a sus niveles de confianza en la realización de tratamientos de endodoncia. Materiales y métodos: se distribuyeron encuestas anónimas a 40 estudiantes de último año y 37 nuevos pasantes en UST, en Sana'a, Yemen. Se les pidió que indicaran su nivel de confianza en sí mismos utilizando un sistema de puntuación Likert que oscilaba entre 1 y 5. Se utilizaron la prueba U de Mann-Whitney y la prueba de ji al cuadrado para determinar la significación estadística entre los grupos estudiados. Resultados: el 37.5% de los estudiantes y el 35.1% de los pasantes calificaron la práctica de endodoncia como difícil. Solo el 55% de los estudiantes encontró que el número de casos tratados fue satisfactorio, similar al reportado por los pasantes (56.8%). No hubo diferencias estadísticamente significativas entre ambos grupos con respecto a los niveles de autoconfianza para la mayoría de los procedimientos de endodoncia (p<0.05). La colocación de una presa de goma, seguida de la gestión de brotes entre citas, fueron procedimientos en los que ambos grupos informaron la menor confianza. Por otro lado, ambos grupos sintieron la menor confianza en el tratamiento del maxilar seguido de los molares mandibulares. Se informaron Abstract: Aim: The present study aimed to collect information from senior students and new interns enrolled at the College of Dentistry, University of Science and Technology (UST), regarding their confidence levels in performing endodontic treatments. Materials and Methods: Anonymous surveys were distributed to 40 senior students and 37 new interns at UST, in Sana'a, Yemen. They were asked to indicate their self-confidence level using a Likert scoring system ranging from 1 and 5. Mann-Whitney U test and chi-squared test were used to determine statistical significance between the studied groups. Results: 37.5% of students and 35.1% of interns rated endodontic practice as difficult. Only 55% of students found that the number of treated cases were satisfactory, similar to that reported by interns (56.8%). There were no statistically significant differences between both groups regarding self-confidence levels for most endodontic procedures (p<0.05). Placing of a rubber dam, followed by managing inter-appointment flare-ups were procedures in which both groups reported the lowest confidence. On the other hand, both groups felt the lowest confidence in the treatment of maxillary followed by mandibular molars. Statistically significant differences were reported between the two groups for performing root canal treatments (RCT) (p< 0.05).
