The sedative effects of hops(Humulus lupulus), a component of beer, on the activity/rest rhythm

Abstract: The concentration of 2 mg of hop extract effectively decreased nocturnal activity in the circadian activity rhythm. On the basis of this investigation, administration of non-alcoholic beer would be recommended due to its hop content and consequent sedative action, which would be an aid to nocturnal sleep.

“…Ageing is a very complex process that shows symptoms of chronodisruption that produces sleep disturbances (30) and other physiological or psychological dysfunctions (2), including impaired nutrient absorption (37,47), immunosenescence (9,31,48), decrease in hormone levels (38), and neuronal cell death (20,40). The elderly rats used in our research showed such chronodisruption symptoms as an increase in diurnal activity (sleep time) and intraday variability in locomotor activity.…”

“…The mechanism of the action of these components is to activate the neurotransmitter γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) by modulating brain GABA(A) receptors (24), thus inhibiting the central nervous system. In particular, this effect of hops on the nervous system has been reported in animal model studies (11,21,44), it also has a narcotic effect of high concentrations of hop extract due to its aforementioned 2-methyl-3-buten-2-ol component (9,42). Basic research on hops has been used to help healthy stress free human population to sleep (31,38).…”

“…It is also the only drink that contains hops (Humulus lupulus), a plant with sedative properties. Hop contains α-acids bitter, 2-methyl-3-buten-2-ol, acting on neurotransmitter GABA effects, the major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system; it also contains xanthumol and myrcenol both of them are present in the hop of the beer, providing its sedative properties that act in the same way as α-acids bitter on the neurotransmitter GABA (11,38).…”

“…38 A study in quail supported this idea somewhat, showing that low doses of hops (similar to concentrations found in nonalcoholic beer) seemed to enhance circadian rhythms, including reduced activity at night. 39 Binding of hops extract compounds to 5-HT 6 , 5-HT 7 , melatonin-1, and melatonin-2 receptors was seen in another in vitro study. 40 Various hops constituents may also activate the GABA A receptor.…”
