ReceivedDepending on the reaction conditions, meta-and para-5,5 Hphenyleneditetrazoles 25 react with Cd, Zn and Mn(II) salts to give essentially different, as regards both composition and structure, complexes 26, 27, 44 28, 45 29. 46 The structures of compounds 26 ± 29 were determined by X-ray diffraction. Compounds 26 ± 28 in which the doubly charged anions derived from tetrazole 25 function as bridges are two-and three-dimensional coordination polymers. Conversely, compound 29 is a mononuclear aqua complex containing no metal ± tetrazole coordination bond. In the structure of complex 28, one-dimensional channels were found which occupy up to 35% of the void volume and encapsulate tetrameric cyclic water clusters and DMF molecules. On heating to 150 8C, water and DMF are removed from the channels, which accounts for the interest of researchers in this type of compound for the preparation of inclusion compounds and sorbents. A family of sensitive energetic salts of the 5-nitrotetrazolate anion with alkali metal cations (Li+, Na+, K+, Rb+ and Cs+) were synthesized either by the digestion of an acid copper salt of 5-nitrotetrazole with a suitable metal hydroxide, or alternatively by reaction of ammonium 5-nitrotetrazolate with a suitable metal base (MOH, MHCO3 or M2CO3) in aqueous or alcoholic solution. All the compounds were characterized by analytical methods (elemental analysis and mass spectrometry) and spectroscopic methods (NMR and vibrational spectroscopy). The lighter metal salts and , incorporate three and two crystal water molecules in the structure, respectively, whereas the heavier alkali metal derivatives form anhydrous species, and thus showed enhanced sensitivity to friction and shock. In addition, the crystal structure of each of the new materials was determined by X-ray diffraction techniques ( and : monoclinic, P2(1)/c; : triclinic, P1; : monoclinic, Cc and : monoclinic, C2/c). The thermal stability of compounds was assessed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements showing significant thermal stability. Lastly, the energies of combustion of and were measured experimentally using oxygen bomb calorimetry (, -1340(15) cal g(-1) and , -1200(20) cal g(-1)) and was used to calculate their standard molar heats of formation (, -610(55) kJ mol(-1) and , -360(65) kJ mol(-1)).

Deprotonation of ammonium 5‐nitrotetrazolate in aqueous or alcoholic solution upon reaction with a suitable alkaline earth metal (M2+) hydroxide or carbonate (M2+ = Mg2+, Ca2+, Sr2+ or Ba2+) leads to the synthesis of a family of sensitive energetic metal salts based on the 5‐nitrotetrazolate anion (NT–). These new compounds were characterized by IR, Raman and NMR (1H, 13C and 14N) spectroscopy as well as by mass spectrometry and elemental analysis. In addition, the crystal structure of the calcium salt was determined by low‐temperature X‐ray measurements [orthorombic, space group Pna2; a = 6.8960(2), b = 32.575(1), c = 6.2399(2) Å; V = 1401.73(8) Å3]. All compounds show good thermal stabilities at or above 180 °C, as proved by DSC measurements, and the sensitivity of the salts towards impact and friction increases with the size of the cation (Mg < Ca < Sr < Ba). Lastly, the 5‐nitro‐2H‐tetrazole salts presented here show promise for future use as energetic compounds.(© Wiley‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, 69451 Weinheim, Germany, 2009)
