We introduce L 2 -Betti numbers, as well as a general homology and cohomology theory for the standard invariants of subfactors, through the associated quasi-regular symmetric enveloping inclusion of II 1 factors. We actually develop a (co)homology theory for arbitrary quasi-regular inclusions of von Neumann algebras. For crossed products by countable groups Γ, we recover the ordinary (co)homology of Γ. For Cartan subalgebras, we recover Gaboriau's L 2 -Betti numbers for the associated equivalence relation. In this common framework, we prove that the L 2 -Betti numbers vanish for amenable inclusions and we give cohomological characterizations of property (T), the Haagerup property and amenability. We compute the L 2 -Betti numbers for the standard invariants of the Temperley-Lieb-Jones subfactors and of the Fuss-Catalan subfactors, as well as for free products and tensor products.

Guidelines for Management of Geoheritage: an Approach in the Sertão Central, Brazilian Northeastern Semiarid

The characterisation of geoheritage and the understanding of the physical and socio-cultural features of a territory are essential to achieve the major geoconservation goals: protection and sustainable use of exceptional elements of geodiversity. This research was done in the Sertão Central, an economic vulnerable area in the hinterland of northeast Brazil, remarked by the Caatinga Biome and a rocky, semiarid landscape. The area comprises an assemblage of deformed igneous and metamorphic rocks, such as gneisses, TTG rocks, schists, and granites. Starting from a regional geoheritage inventory done in 2015, fourteen geosites were selected and assessed, representing a wide regional tectonic evolution from the Precambrian West Gondwanan orogenesis to the Cenozoic development of particular examples of Brazilian granitic inselbergs. In addition to the inventory of geosites, six geodiversity sites were also evaluated, along with five geocultural sites, highlighting the cultural value of geodiversity in the area. Based on the available information, an analysis with the main features and spatial configuration of the geoheritage was developed, allowing to designate the most appropriate use for each geological site. Considering geoconservation as a geoscientific fostering for the sustainable development, our study suggests a set of general guidelines for the management of geoheritage, in order to facilitate the decision-making process by local managers and stakeholders as well as to promote the discussion on geotourism strategies for the region. Organised according to welldefined geoconservation strategies, these guidelines could enhance the sustainable development of vulnerable regions, such as Sertão Central itself.

Geosites are essential elements of Geoparks, which can be used to transform geoheritage into sustainable economic, educational and social resources. One of the challenges we are generally facing today is in using these sites to their maximum potential, while ensuring their proper protection. In our experience, doing so successfully implies on one hand correctly evaluating their values, both from a quantitative point of view and from a qualitative, management perspective. On the other hand, it involves anchoring the management of the sites within the local communities, and that can be done by connecting them with as many local economic touchpoints as possible. An additional layer that ensures both the proper functioning of geosites as local resources, as well as their proper protection, is a holistic interpretation strategy that combines elements of geodiversity, biodiversity and cultural diversity, particularly the connection between people and places. Here, we illustrate this multifaceted approach using as examples five salt geosites from Buzău Land, in the Carpathian Mountains, Romania. We quantitatively evaluate the scientific, educational and touristic values, as well as the degradation risks of the geosites, and we qualitatively assess the tourist attractor potential of these sites and their interpretive value. Based on these analyses, we create a valuing framework in the guise of five geotrails, each with a distinct thematic that combines as many elements of local heritage as possible, as well as connecting them with local community members and businesses (i.e. economic touchpoints).
