The ScHARR LMIC filter: Adapting a low‐ and middle‐income countries geographic search filter to identify studies on preterm birth prevention and management

Abstract: Search filters are used to find evidence on specific subjects. Performance of filters can be varied and may need adapting to meet the needs of research topics. There are limited geographic search filters available, and only one pertaining to low‐ and middle‐income countries (LMICs). When searching for literature on preterm birth prevention and management in LMICs for a research project at the School of Health and Related Research (ScHARR), we made use of the Cochrane Effective Practice and Organisation of Care… Show more

“…For African geographic regions, we will adapt a geographic African filter validated by the South African Cochrane Centre,30 by correcting the name ‘Mayotte’ and including alternative missing African country names (eg, ‘Ruanda’, ‘Comoros’ and ‘Cabo Verde’). We will use the list of African region names used to develop the low-income and middle-income countries’ geographic search filter by the Cochrane Effective Practice and Organisation of Care, in collaboration with the WHO and Campbell Collaboration 31 32…”

“…For the exact search on LMIC names, we adopted the ScHARR LMIC filter. 9 Please note that a publication was identified from Martinique, which is located in the Lesser Antilles of the West Indies in the eastern Caribbean Sea and is an overseas region of France. Considering the distinctive race and ethnicity that people from Martinique may have compared to people from France, as well as the scarcity of publications from the Caribbean, the international workgroup has decided to categorize this study in the GBD regions "Latin America and the Caribbean" based on its location for the data analyses.…”

“…ABC drafted the preliminary version of the search strategy for Ovid MEDLINE. The search terms were based on previous works to reflect three concepts: 1) intervention [27,28], 2) health system functionality [11,29], and 3) low-and middle-income regions [30,31]. For the latter, we used a search filter developed by the Cochrane Effective Practice and Organisation of Care (EPOC) in collaboration with the WHO and Campbell Collaboration [30,31].…”

The preliminary search strategy was reviewed by our core team of experts in health information systems, public health, implementation science, or knowledge syntheses from Africa (TY, DK, MT, CB, SNK, and MMR).…”
