The scattering of muons in low-Z materials

Abstract: This paper presents the measurement of the scattering of 172 MeV/c muons in assorted materials, including liquid hydrogen, motivated by the need to understand ionisation cooling for muon acceleration.Data are compared with predictions from the GEANT 4 simulation code and this simulation is used to deconvolute detector effects. The scattering distributions obtained are compared with the Moliere theory of multiple scattering and, in the case of liquid hydrogen, with ELMS. With the exception of ELMS, none of the … Show more

“…The G4CoulombScattering process is an alternative to the MSC process. The results for the different MSC models and this process are shown in figure 2, where Geant4 9.0 simulation predictions are compared with the data [14] of the MuScat experiment (172 MeV/c muons scattering at thin foils). All results for the central part of scattering (θ < 0.03) are in agreement with the data, for the tail the option skin = 2 seems to be the most accurate, however, other predictions agree with the data within two standard deviations.…”

“…The grid is extracted from a detailed geant geometry which incorporates the silicon sensors, support and readout structures, the beampipe and the drift chamber's internal construction. During the particle propagation, the Landau-distributed ionization energy loss, bremsstrahlung (including detailed estimation of the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal 34 suppression of soft photon bremsstrahlung), Compton scattering and e + e − conversion of photons, as well as multiple scattering [35][36][37] are simulated. Hits are deposited on the drift chamber wires according to measured efficiencies and resolutions, and used to fit tracks in the same manner as the collider data.…”
