The Sarcheshmeh thickened tailings disposal project

Abstract: The National Iranian Copper Industries Company owns and operates three concentrators in the Islamic Republic of Iran. The largest of these three operations is the Sarcheshmeh complex, which has been in operation since the early 1980s and now treats over 65,000 tpd of copper ore. An expansion to 96,000 tpd is planned to come on stream in the next few years. Water is a limited resource in this very arid area the water management of the whole operation was reviewed when the expansion was proposed. A thickened tai… Show more

“…In 2012, the first large tonnage copper tailings P&TT scheme was implemented in Iran at NICICO's Sar Cheshme mine (MacNamara et al 2011). This scheme was treating an equivalent tonnage as Minera Esperanza (96,000 t/d), but the flow sheet included several smaller diameter DCT units (12 × 24 m diameter).…”

“…Water scarcity in the region can justify the capital and operating costs of the utilisation of more sophisticated dewatering technologies (Roshdieh et al 2016). However, since 12 24 m diameter paste thickeners are already utilised (MacNamara et al 2011), the huge operating cost of material handling of the cake (transportation and distribution) could be a prohibiting factor in the utilisation of the filtration option (in this case filter presses).…”
