“…Music can also take up the grammatical position of Purpose, as in music is my life type statements. Some awkward efforts have been made to rescue music from the stultifying effects of its nominalisation using terms like 'musicking' and 'to music' (Small, 1998;Sturman, 2019). The efforts required to unpack the noun are extensive because, as terminology, music covers an enormous multitude of activities and contexts, as indicated by Small (1998).…”

“…Small includes piano removalists, road crew, and ticket sales people among those involved in the verbal group 'to music' (p. 9). Sturman (2019) notes that a musical score also plays a role in objectifying our understandings of music. Vinyl records, cassettes, and reels of tape are similarly thing-like objects that hide the social, cultural and political aspects of music, not just in its making, but also its placement in movies, streaming services and all media forms.…”

“…I am truly willing to learn more about Thai ethnomusicology (in that, admittedly, the main reason is self-centred, as I plan to use insights gained through the comparison as a means to improve my own work), but I simply have neither the capacity nor the time to conduct research on my own by reading dozens of partial, indirect or locally directed writings in order propriately with the last part of the paper dedicated to decolonial ethnomusicology. Another option was to rest my comparison on the recently published The SAGE International Encyclopedia of Music and Culture (Sturman 2019) because its discourse is very strongly centred around the virtues of different ethnomusicologies (see its "Introduction"), while the actual contributions, to my impression, managed to achieve the aim, at best, only partially. So this comparison would nicely add to the emphasis of this paper.…”

“…There are several definitions, understandings, and applications of the concept of authenticity across music professions. Many scholars align with the music education scholar Merlin Thompson, initially describing the concept in terms of genuineness or realness, using related terms such as sincerity, truthfulness, honesty, originality, pureness, realness, rootedness, amicability, selftransparency, and being true to one's (musical) self (Bingham et al, 2022;Ferrara, 2017;Hedigan, 2010;Johnson, 2022;Moore, 2002;Qirko, 2019;Ríos, 2017;Stamatis, 2019;Viega, 2015;Weisethaunet & Lindberg, 2010). However, further definitions, understandings, and perspectives split off into various directions and philosophical considerations.…”
