The article presented development directions in product, devices and service design related to ensuring broader accessibility for all users, with a particular focus on transportation. In this aspect, the requirements recorded in both national and international legal acts related to accessibility, including accessibility in transport, were reviewed. Compliance the analyzed regulations requires a human-centric approach to the design of means of transport, which in turn increases the likelihood of their wider use by people with various mobility needs.. However, this necessitates the designer's knowledge of the needs and limitations of end users. Special attention was paid to the concept of Universal Design (UD), based on the 7 principles formulated by Ronald Mace. Examples of technical solutions from the field of transportation innovation based on the principles of Universal Design were presented. The application of such an approach was also demonstrated in individual transportation – a vehicle accessible to drivers with limited lower limb mobility. In the summary, the authors emphasize that the devices available on the market are designed with wide customization possibilities in mind, without the need for extensive modifications. Therefore, most of these devices can be used by a wide range of people with disabilities, consistent with UD principles.

Usability and Vibration Analysis of a Low-Profile Automatic Powered Wheelchair to Motor Vehicle Docking System

The QLX is a low-profile automatic powered wheelchair docking system (WDS) prototype developed to improve the securement and discomfort of wheelchair users when riding in vehicles. The study evaluates the whole-body vibration effects between the proposed QLX and another WDS (4-point tiedown system) following ISO 2631-1 standards and a systematic usability evaluation. Whole-body vibration analysis was evaluated in wheelchairs using both WDS to dock in a vehicle while riding on real-world surfaces. Also, participants rated the usability of each WDS while driving a wheelchair and while riding in a vehicle in driving tasks. Both WDSs showed similar vibration results within the vibration health-risk margins; but shock values below health-risk margins. Fifteen powered wheelchair users reported low task load demand to operate both WDS; but better performance to dock in vehicles with the QLX (p = 0.03). Also, the QLX showed better usability (p < 0.01), less discomfort (p’s < 0.05), and greater security compared to the 4-point tiedown while riding in a vehicle (p’s < 0.05). Study findings indicate that both WDS maintain low shock exposure for wheelchair users while riding vehicles, but a better performance overall to operate the QLX compared to the 4-point tiedown system; hence enhancing user’s autonomy to dock in vehicles independently.

The article presents an electronic anti-theft protection subsystem that was incorporated into the vehicle control system dedicated to people with special communication needs. The aim of the work was to design and test an electronic subsystem allowing for the acquisition and quick analysis of fingerprint images, checking whether they belong to the vehicle owner and generating a signal allowing the vehicle to be started. The following hypothesis was put forward: it is possible to use artificial intelligence for accurate, automatic classification of fingerprint images acquired in a system with a single-chip microcomputer in order to identify a person. The research niche includes the use of biometrics in electronic anti-theft security adapted to people with special needs. This solution reduces the risk of theft and unauthorized use of special vehicles tailored to the owners' individual needs. The use of a commercial algorithm offered by the sensor manufacturer or the use of artificial neural networks for the classification of fingerprints was considered. The results of research on the accuracy of fingerprint recognition obtained from the developed subsystem are presented. The experiments performed based on the NASNetLarge artificial neural network model confirmed the possibility of achieving recognition accuracy for the test set of 99.99%. Additionally, practical aspects of the applicability of the presented device in an electric vehicle control system supporting the movement of people with physical and/or intellectual disabilities were discussed. The presented solution, after minor modifications, can be used in access security systems for protected rooms, as well as vehicles and military equipment.
