The Safety and Effectiveness of a Novel Annular Keratopigmentation Method: A Case Report

Abstract: Background: We investigated the safety and effectiveness of a novel aesthetic femtosecond-assisted annular keratopigmentation technique. Case Report: A 21-year-old female patient in good general and ophthalmological health with the wish to change the colour of her eyes was treated with a femtosecond-assisted annular keratopigmentation technique. Pigment was inserted in a channel in the cornea (external diameter 9.3 mm; internal diameter 5.5 mm) created with a femtosecond laser at a depth of 225 μm. Eight month… Show more

“…Purely aesthetic FAK has proven its safety and good aesthetic results. 15,18,19 Concerning long term complications, in our 8 years of experience, we have not seen any corneal decompensation or intrastromal pigment dispersion, the pigment being maintained in the intrastromal tunnels created with the femtosecond laser.…”

“…Ferrari described the FAK technique and used it for the first time in normal eyes for purely aesthetic reasons. 18 Further studies showed the safety and effectiveness of purely aesthetic keratopigmentation. 16,19 FAK achieved good cosmetic results and is associated with high patient satisfaction.…”

“…This technique has been reported to be more precise, safer, and easier to perform, based on the tunnel formation and good wound healing, (11) and it is well tolerated by patients (22). However, some limitations have also been reported for FAK (23). First of all, it is necessary that there be no corneal damage and no retinal abnormalities because suction may worsen corneal integrity and can cause peripheral retinal holes or tears.…”

“…We previously reported on the safety and effectiveness of a novel esthetic keratopigmentation method in a clinical case report [ 17 ]. This technique consists first of creating an intrastromal annular tunnel with a femtosecond laser, and then the dissection is made with a special round spatula followed up by the insertion of a micronized mineral pigment (Biotic Phocéa, Marseille, France).…”
