The Rules of Beeping: Exchanging Messages Via Intentional “Missed Calls” on Mobile Phones

Abstract: This article explores the practice of “beeping” or “missed calling” between mobile phone users, or calling a number and hanging up before the mobile’s owner can pick up the call. Most beeps are requests to call back immediately, but they can also send a pre‐negotiated instrumental message such as “pick me up now” or a relational sign, such as “I’m thinking of you.” The practice itself is old, with roots in landline behaviors, but it has grown tremendously, particularly in the developing world. Based on intervi… Show more

“…As Donner (2008:148) Donner 2007). Flashing is a way to reduce the cost of maintaining relationships: it reminds distant call recipients of ties and obligations, and with minimal effort; thus it is often employed by young people as a way of connecting to older/richer people whom they hope will then phone them or at least remember they exist.…”

“…Here the design ideas that were articulated by participants point towards elaboration of Donner's "call me back" studies (cf. [10]). They evoke too the way that the visual can be used to create a currency of meaning and co-presence, as described, for example, with the use of Glancephones [16].…”

“…In an early example of this work, Donner [10] provides a report on the practice of missed calls, where one user calls another and deliberately terminates before it is answered, to communicate intentions ranging from "call me back" to "I am thinking about you" without incurring cost. Meanwhile, the Spoken Web, developed by IBM Research India, was an ambitious infrastructure providing information services from any handset over a standard, analogue telephone network and supporting, for instance, interactive forums [1].…”

“…ANT provided a framework for describing the process of technology adoption and developing stories which explained the take-up. Donner (2007) used adaptive structuration theory to explore the use of mobile phones and meanings behind certain uses. The use of activity theory to frame studies surrounding the patterns of use of mobile technology (Wiredu, 2007;Wiredu & Sørensen, 2006) remains emergent rather than established.…”
