East Antarctic Landfast Sea Ice Distribution and Variability, 2000–08

This study presents the first continuous, high spatiotemporal resolution time series of landfast sea ice extent along the East Antarctic coast for the period March 2000–December 2008. The time series was derived from consecutive 20-day cloud-free Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) composite images. Fast ice extent across the East Antarctic coast shows a statistically significant (1.43% ±0.30% yr−1) increase. Regionally, there is a strong increase in the Indian Ocean sector (20°–90°E, 4.07% ±0.42% yr−1), and a nonsignificant decrease in the western Pacific Ocean sector (90°–160°E, −0.40% ±0.37% yr−1). An apparent shift from a negative to a positive extent trend is observed in the Indian Ocean sector from 2004. This shift also coincides with a greater amount of interannual variability. No such shift in apparent trend is observed in the western Pacific Ocean sector, where fast ice extent is typically higher and variability lower than the Indian Ocean sector. The limit to the maximum fast ice areal extent imposed by the location of grounded icebergs modulates the shape of the mean annual fast ice extent cycle to give a broad maximum and an abrupt, relatively transient minimum. Ten distinct fast ice regimes are identified, related to variations in bathymetry and coastal configuration. Fast ice is observed to form in bays, on the windward side of large grounded icebergs, between groups of smaller grounded icebergs, between promontories, and upwind of coastal features (e.g., glacier tongues). Analysis of the timing of fast ice maxima and minima is also presented and compared with overall sea ice maxima/minima timing.

A B S T R A C TThis work is set out to quantify the contribution of tropical and extratropical atmospheric forcing mechanisms to the formation of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) pattern. Although the NAO varies on a wide range of time scales, we focus on 10Á60 d. At these time scales, mechanisms are at play in the atmosphere that can generate the characteristic dipole pattern. We focus on the tropical Rossby Wave Source (RWS) and extratropical eddy activity. Anomalous tropical and extratropical vorticity forcing associated with the NAO is derived from atmospheric reanalysis data and applied in an idealised barotropic model. Also, using winds from composites of the NAO, the vorticity forcing is derived inversely from the barotropic vorticity equation. Both types of forcing are imposed in the barotropic model in the tropics and extratropics, respectively. An important result is that the tropics dampen the NAO as a result of a negative feedback generated in the extratropics. The damping is strongest, about 30%, for the negative phase of the NAO. For the positive phase, the damping is about 50% smaller. The results show that the barotropic vorticity equation can represent the dynamics of both tropical and extratropical forcing related to the formation of the NAO patterns.

Jet streams located on the dynamical tropopause are accompanied by coaligned bands of enhanced potential vorticity (PV) gradients, and these bands can serve as space-time evolving waveguides for synoptic and larger-scale flow. Consideration is given to the detection and examination of the along-flow extent and lateral confinement of the waveguides on the dynamic tropopause (i.e., iso-PV surface) and on tropopause-cutting isentropic surfaces. Thereafter a two-part study is undertaken of the possible interaction between such waveguides (i.e., jet streams). First, a highly idealized theoretical model points to the nature of the dynamical linkage that can exist between perturbations on coaligned waveguides. Second, diagnostic analysis of two observed events helps identify the contemporaneous space-time evolution of the jets and serves to illustrate the nature of the transfer of wave activity from the extratropical waveguide onto a subtropical and a polar waveguide, respectively.
