Reported ancient bottom current deposits in deep marine settings are scarce and most of them remain contentious. This study describes sedimentological, ichnological and petrographical characteristics of a drill core that covers ca 10 Myr of Upper Cretaceous stratigraphy at Hold with Hope, northeast Greenland. The core is divided into four facies associations, which are interpreted to reflect deposition from bottom currents, turbidity flows and hemipelagic settling in slope and/or near slope environments. The evidence for bottom current influence is threefold. Firstly, pervasive indications of winnowing such as marine bioclast-rich lags and outsized clasts on 'mud on mud' contacts are suggestive of low-sediment concentration flows capable of transporting up to pebble-sized clasts. Common Mn-Fe-Mg rich carbonate matrix cements and various types of hiatal chemogenic lag deposits showing glauconite, apatite and carbonate clasts also point to condensation, prolonged exposure at the sediment-water interface and recurrent phases of seafloor erosion. Secondly, such deposits can show indicators for tidal processes such as double mud-drapes, tangential bottom sets in dune-scale cross-bedding and cyclic rhythmites. Thirdly, inverse to normal grading at various scales is common in fully marine, commonly seafloor-derived sediments. Ichnological data indicate considerable taxonomic variability in the bottom current deposits, but recurrent fabrics are characteristically dominated by morphologically simple burrows such as Thalassinoides and Planolites, with secondary Phycosiphon, Nereites, Zoophycos and/or Chondrites. In general, opportunistic taxa are common whereas mature composite ichnofabrics are rare. The omission surfaces are locally burrowed with stiffground to firmground trace fossil suites. The results contribute to establishing sedimentological, ichnological and mineralogical criteria for recognition of bottom current deposits as well as to the understanding of the Late Cretaceous palaeoenvironmental evolution of the Arctic region.

Feeding trace fossils, produced by either deposit or detritus feeders and showing radial to rosetted morphology, are all included in the same architectural category. These radial to rosette ichnofossils are widely recorded worldwide throughout the Phanerozoic and have attracted the attention of numerous ichnologists for decades. Construction of a database summarizing occurrences of radial to rosette trace fossils through the Phanerozoic shows that representatives of this category occurred for the first time during the Fortunian, which accounts for the appearance of at least 12% of the total number of ichnogenera in this category. Overall, 32% of all known rosette ichnogenera resulted from the Cambrian Explosion. A second ichnodiversity increase took place (20%) during the Ordovician. Subsequent to the Great Ordovician Biodiversification Event, this architectural category shows minor fluctuations in ichnodiversity resulting in a long‐term plateau. The apparent decline in ichnodiversity by the end of the Cenozoic could reflect a taphonomic artefact resulting from the difficulties of identifying cumulative trace fossils in highly bioturbated modern sediments. Our data set indicates that several radial to rosette ichnogenera (e.g. Arenituba, Dactylophycus, Gyrophyllites, Phoebichnus, Volkichnium) occurred first in shallow‐marine settings and then migrated to either deeper‐water or marginal‐marine environments, while others (e.g. Asterichnus, Cladichnus, Dactyloidites) apparently first occurred in deep‐sea environments and then migrated to shallower waters.

A co-occurrence of the ichnogenus Phymatoderma and a star-shaped horizontal trace fossil was discovered from Neogene deep-marine deposits (Misaki Formation, central Japan), and is described herein for the first time. Phymatoderma consists of a straight to slightly curved tunnel that shows first- or second-order branches. The tunnels are 5.30–27.25 mm in diameter and are filled with ellipsoidal pellets. The relatively well-preserved star-shaped trace fossil is a large horizontal structure (~18 cm×19 cm) that consists of at least 10 spokes with diameters ranging from 11.49–20.96 mm. As compared to modern analogous surface-feeding traces produced by abyssal echiuran worms and their burrow morphology, it is highly likely that the star-shaped trace fossil and Phymatoderma found from the Misaki Formation are feeding and fecal traces of ancient deep-sea echiurans, respectively. Difference in preservation potential between surface and subsurface traces may result in rare occurrence of star-shaped trace fossils as compared to Phymatoderma. Microscopic observation of the pelletal infill of Phymatoderma also reveals that the trace-maker fed on organic debris and microorganisms such as diatoms and radiolaria.
