The Rorschach in child guidance.

Abstract: The historical development of the Rorschach method as applied to children, its uses in the child guidance clinic, and its limitations in work with children are discussed. It is concluded that the method has proved a valuable clinical adjunct to the psychological test battery in the child guidance clinic, in child-guidance work in the broader use of the term, in education, and in related fields. 11 uses of the method in the Bureau of Child Guidance are cited.

“…Rorschach himself died shortly after the publication of his famous work, but a tremendous amount of research has followed. The test is widely used in clinical diagnosis (103,104,108,124), has been introduced in the armed services for research and diagnostic purposes (112,113), and has been applied to a variety of problems, including psychopathology (104,124,133), developmental psychology (122,126,127) and recently to vocational guidance (134) (106). There is probably no topic in psychology concerning which pro and con feeling runs higher, but despite the rash enthusiasm of converts and the blind opposition of skeptics, it has grown in use and reputation.…”

“…When separate workers have obtained from 80 to 94 per cent accuracy of prediction of the therapeutic outcome, this possible use in guidance cannot be overlooked (36). Wide use is being made of projective testing in social work agencies, child guidance bureaus, mental hygiene clinics, personel bureaus (22,40). Most modern guidance agencies find these tests indispensable in any comprehensive personality evaluation of their clients or patients.…”

“…The method has also been found of value in child guidance clinics and guidance centers. Krugman (16), for example, reports: "At the senior high school level the group method serves a useful purpose.…”
